Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - For the second straight game, Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) blocked a shot in the final minute to help preserve a victory as Hood defeated visiting Widener 63-61 at BB&T Arena.
The win put the Blazers into a three-way tie for third place in the Commonwealth Conference standings with Alvernia and Arcadia. All three teams have matching 7-6 records.
Terell Buyck (Forestville, Md. / Bishop McNamara) came off the bench for a game-high 17 points. The senior hit 5-of-10 field goals and was 2-of-5 on 3-pointers. He sank all five of his free throw attempts. Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) added 15 points and three steals. Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) netted 14 points and dished out a career-high seven assists. Trevor Magnuski (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) grabbed seven rebounds.
A pair of free throws by Greg Lawson gave the Pride a 60-55 lead with 4:47 left, but neither team scored for nearly three minutes afterwards. In the midst of the drought, Hood had a three-chance possession, but came away empty. Cook stole the ball on Widener's next possession and was fouled. He hit both free throws to start an 8-1 run over the final 1:56.
Sam Smith missed a jumper with 1:30 left, but Jermaine Kamara hauled in the rebound and was fouled. The center missed both free throws and Daniels grabbed the carom for the Blazers. Hood pulled within one when Hill sent a pass to Magnuski, whose layup attempt was goaltended to make it 60-59 with 1:07 on the clock.
It was Magnuski again the next trip down the floor for Hood, off another assist from Hill for the go-ahead bucket and a 61-60 lead with 35 seconds to go. With 16 seconds left, Kendall Green had a chance for Widener, but Daniels got a piece of the ball. Magnuski got the rebound and Hill was fouled.
After the junior sank one free throw, Widener got the ball down low to Kamara, who was fouled with 2.4 seconds remaining. He missed the first free throw, but hit the second to pull the Pride within two. Cook was then fouled with 1.7 seconds on the clock and sank his first foul shot, but missed the second. Lawson got the rebound and timeout was called with 1.5 seconds to play. On the ensuing inbounds play, the Pride failed to get off a shot before the horn.
Widener led for much of the first half before the Blazers went on a 10-3 run to take a 31-28 advantage into halftime.
Kamara had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a game-high 12 rebounds. Carlos Taylor went 4-of-6 from the field on his way to 13 points. Green added eight rebounds.
Hood went 15-of-20 at the free throw line (75 percent). The Blazers also committed just 10 turnovers in the game.
On February 14, Hood travels to Stevenson for a Commonwealth Conference clash at 3 p.m.
