Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Hood College's Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) scored eight of his game-high 27 points in the final 1:14 as the Blazers came from behind to defeat Stevenson, 75-72.
The win gave Hood a key victory in the Commonwealth Conference standings. The Blazers kept pace with Alvernia and Arcadia for third place with matching 8-6 marks, and pulled all three teams within a game of second place Stevenson (9-5).
With Hood trailing 72-67 after a pair of free throws by the Mustangs' Erik Fisher late in the second half, Cook scored the game's final eight points to complete the Blazers' comeback.
The senior guard finished 7-of-16 shooting and went 12-of-16 from the free throw line. Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half and set a career-high in assists for the second straight game. The junior had eight assists and three steals, while hitting 3-of-5 3-point field goals. James Brown (Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Country Day) scored a dozen points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Trevor Magnuski (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) had eight of his career-high 11 points in the first half, but it was a late-game defensive play by the sophomore that sealed the win. Hood led 73-72 after a three-point play by Cook with 23 seconds left. Stevenson advanced the ball past midcourt and called a timeout seven seconds later. After the timeout, Christian Roberts dribbled in front of the Mustang bench and tried a lob to a cutting Justin Kuntz on the far block. Magnuski was in perfect position, intercepted the pass and shoveled the ball to Cook with five seconds remaining.
Cook was fouled and hit both free throws at the other end. Needing a three to tie, a desperation shot by Colby Giacubeno was off the mark.
The Mustangs scored the first five points of the second half to take their biggest lead, 42-33, after a layup by Kuntz less than a minute and a half into the period. Hood chipped away at the deficit, and took a 58-56 lead on Cook's only three of the day with eight minutes to go. After Stevenson tied the game on its next possession, Magnuski drained a 3-pointer to make it 61-58 with 7:16 on the clock.
Later, Giaccubeno and Fisher combined for all the Stevenson scoring during an 8-4 run that broke a 64-64 tie and put the Mustangs ahead 72-68 with 2:13 left. From there, Cook accounted for all the scoring down the stretch to lift Hood to the win.
Fisher paced Stevenson with 18 points. Roberts added 15, and Kuntz had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Giacubeno came off the bench for 13 points, but was just 3-of-12 from the field.
Hood tied a season-best with just nine turnovers in the game, while forcing 15 by Stevenson. The Blazers were 7-of-18 from the 3-point arc (39 percent), while holding the Mustangs to just 40 percent on all field goals.
