Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) blocked a potential go-ahead shot, then hit the game-winning free throws in the final minute in a 66-64 win over Alvernia.
The victory tied the Blazers and Crusaders for fourth in the Commonwealth Conference standings with matching 6-6 records, but Hood would own the tie-breaker with a sweep of the season series.
Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) came off the bench to match Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) for team-high honors with 15 points apiece. Hill was 4-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point distance. Daniels finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Trevor Magnuski (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and had three assists.
Hood jumped ahead 11-4 early as James Brown (Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Country Day) scored seven points in the first six minutes. The Crusaders battled back and a three by Mike Miller gave the visitors a 23-20 lead with six minutes left in the half. Hill knocked down a 3-pointer with just over a minute left to send the teams into halftime tied at 32-32.
A 12-4 run to open the second half put Alvernia on top 44-36 after a jumper by Harrison Deyo with 16:58 on the game clock. Hood immediately answered with a 15-5 run of its own, claiming a 51-49 lead on another three by Hill with 9:09 remaining. The Crusaders eventually retook the lead and held a 61-57 advantage after a free throw by Deyo with 3:09 to play.
Cook sank a jumper to pull Hood within two on the next possession, but Charles Cooper hit a free throw to make it a three-point game, 62-59 with 2:26 to go. Two free throws by Hill and two for Lamont Clark made it 64-61 in favor of Alvernia with two minutes on the clock.
A jumper and free throw by Hill tied the score with 1:09 left. The Blazers got the offensive board when Hill's second free throw missed the mark, but Alex Shippen stole the ball. With a chance to take the lead, Shippen's shot was blocked by Daniels, who grabbed the rebound and was fouled.
The senior forwards sank both free throws to give Hood the victory.
Cooper scored a game-high 21 points for the Crusaders, but hit just 8-of-20 field goals. Clark added a dozen points and 15 rebounds in the game. Deyo netted 11 points.
Hood held Alvernia to just 35 percent shooting in the game, and just 7-of-30 on 3-point field goals.
The Blazers went 6-of-14 from behind the arc (43 percent).
Both teams took care of the ball, combining for just 22 turnovers in the contest. Hood's bench outscored the Crusaders' 20-6.
Before the game, Hood honored President Dr. Ronald Volpe, who is retiring at the end of the academic year.
The Blazers stay at BB&T Arena to host Widener on February 11 at 8 p.m.
