Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Hood College softball team stumbled twice on the second day of its annual spring break trip to Florida.
Hood fell 7-2 to Lake Forest and 7-4 against Wheaton (Ill.).
LAKE FOREST 7, HOOD 2
A Blazer error opened the door to a five-run second inning that put the game out of reach.
Hood struck first with a run in the top half of the second inning. Ashley Fourcade (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) led off the fram with a single and scored on an RBI double by Kristy Erfurdt (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin).
The Foresters tied the game with a run scoring triple after an error in the bottom of the inning. Two RBI singles, a sacrifice fly and a bases loaded walk extended Lake Forest's lead to 5-1.
Kristen Scott (Rockville, Md. / Walter Johnson) ripped double in the top of the fifth to knock in Kaylee Krietz (Thurmont / Catoctin) and cut the lead to 5-2. Once again, the Foresters answered quickly. Back-to-back RBI doubles put Lake Forest up by five.
Hood had nine hits in the contest, including two apiece by Krietz, Scott and Fourcade.
Vasi Panos and Kat Beall had multi-hit games for the Foresters.
Sophia Leaman (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal) took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 4.1 innings. Beth Laque (Berlin, Md. / Stephen Decatur) hurled 1.2 hitless innings in relief.
Jenny McTague started and picked up the win for Lake Forest. She scattered nine hits over five innings. Jessi Werner pitched two perfect innings in relief.
WHEATON (ILL.) 7, HOOD 4
The Thunder used a pair of three-run innings to claim the victory.
With Wheaton already ahead 1-0 in the first, Lyndsey Pritchard stroked a two-run single to make it 3-0.
Hood got on the board in the fourth, when Fourcade and Jess Sedgwick (Fairfield, Conn. / Cushing Academy) singled to lead off the inning. Fourcade later scored on an error to make it 3-1.
Wheaton stretched it to 4-1 in the top of the fifth, before the Blazers pulled within a run in their half of the inning. Krietz and Erfurdt reached on singles and both runners scored on another error by the Thunder.
After one run had already scored in the Wheaton seventh, Katie Thornton drove in two more with a single to make it 7-3. In the bottom half, yet another error by the Thunder allowed Scott to score.
Krietz notched three hits in the game for Hood.
Kayli Paugh (Elkridge, Md. / Howard) went the distance in the cirlce for the Blazers, striking out eight. Only two of the seven runs were earned.
Abby Butler was the winning pitcher for Wheaton, allowing four unearned runs in six innings. She struck out seven.
Hood takes on Fontbonne and Haverford in Clermont, Florida on March 12.
