FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Despite never competing in the event before, Hood College senior Heather Silveira (Baltimore, Md. / Chesapeake) finished second in the triple jump at the Battleground Relays.
In her first crack at the triple jump, the senior turned in a mark of 31-7 1/4 (9.63 meters).
On the second day of competition, Silveira claimed the win in the 100-meter hurdles and placed second in the 400m hurdles. Silveira won the 100 hurdles in 16.28 and followed it up with a 1:10.02 in the 400 hurdles.
Alexandra Dystant (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) had two second place finishes at the meet. She was second in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:11.62. Dystant teamed with Jackie Mangogna (Kings Park, N.Y. / Kings Park), Jill Heymann (Hackettstown, N.J. / Warren Hills) and Andrea Christmas (Germantown, Md. / Northwest) for a time of 2:01.15 in the spring medley relay.
Heymann, Mangogna and Miranda Sly (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) had individual third place finishes. Heymann joined Silveira in the 100 hurdles and finished in 17.03. Mangogna's third place came in the long jump with a leap of 15-1 1/14 (4.60m). In the 5,000, Sly's 22:53.66 was good for third.
The 4x200 relay of Silveira, Mangogna, Christmas and Heymann took third in 1:57.24. With a time of 4:31.30, the 4x400 relay of Mangogna, Christmas, Dystant and Silveira was fourth.
Samantha Bailey (Shelton, Conn. / Shelton) captured fifth place in the shot put with her throw of 34-2 (10.41m). She broke 100 feet in the discus in her first outdoor competition to move into the all-time top three in the event.
No team scoring was kept at the meet.
Hood is back in action at the Gallaudet University Invitational on March 28.
