Box Score 2 READING, Pa. - The Hood College baseball team continued to play its Commonwealth Conference competition close, but Albright won both ends of the doubleheader, 5-3 and 4-1.
ALBRIGHT 5, HOOD 3
The Blazers led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but a three-run inning by the Lions stole game one, 5-3.
Michael Hernandez (Lancaster, Pa. / Hempfield) and Chris Shriver (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) each had two hit games; and Cameron Esposito (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional) reached base twice via a hit and a walk.
Hood got on the board first, when a two-out single by Shriver scored Paul Quattrone (Laurel, Md. / Reservoir) for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, an error with two outs extended the inning and Evan High hit a two-run double to give Albright a 2-1 lead.
Hernandez and Shriver led off the Blazers' half of the fifth with singles, and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by Tyler Cook (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove). Esposito followed with a bunt single that brought home Hernandez to tie the game. Shriver later came home on a groundout by John Cartagena (Brookfield, Conn. / Immaculate) for a 3-2 lead.
All three Albright runs in the bottom half of the inning scored with two outs. A two-run double by Gabe Santone put the Lions ahead 4-3, and Santone later scored for a two-run lead.
Hood brought the winning run to the plate with two outs in the seventh after Hernandez singled and pinch hitter Eric Turner (Brevard, N.C. / Rosman) walked, but the Blazers were unable to cut into the deficit.
Ryan Atkinson (Hamburg, Pa. / Hamburg) took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 4.2 innings. Travis Schweizer (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) let in an inherited runner in relief, but otherwise scattered three hits over 1.1 scoreless innings.
Santone was the only Lion with more than one hit in the game.
Jared Neiheiser picked up the win on the mound. He went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits and two walks. Trevor Mastria tossed the sixth and seventh for the save.
ALBRIGHT 4, HOOD 1
Albright completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.
Justin Cosing (Reston, Va. / South Lakes) and Drake Friend (Gladwyne, Pa. / Harriton) each walked twice. Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) and Josh Gall (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) both had a hit and a walk.
Four Lion pitchers kept the Blazer offense off-balance until the seventh inning. Warrenfeltz singled with one out and stole second. Gall drove him in with a single to left center.
Hood threatened in each of the previous two innings, but was unable to score any runs. Esposito singled and stole second in the fifth. Warrenfeltz drew a one out walk, but the Lions were able to escape the inning without any damage. In the sixth, Zach Scheuerman (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) led off with a double, and a one-out walk by Friend put two runners on base with one out. Once again, Albright managed to get the next two batters out to end the threat.
An RBI single by Nathan Fretz gave the Lions the lead in the second inning. After a run scored in the fourth, High added an RBI double in the fifth, and another run came home on a fielder's choice for a 4-0 lead.
Cameron Fitzgerald (Bowie, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) got the start and lasted 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs. Blake Krisan (Mount Dora, Fla. / Mount Dora Christian) got a double play ball to end the Albright rally in the fifth, then pitched a scoreless sixth.
High and Dylan Boll had two hits apiece for Albright.
Dylan Price tossed 3.2 scoreless innings, but was lifted in the fourth for Aaron Forker, who pitched two-thirds of an inning to pick up the win.
