Blazers Thwarted by Green Terror

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College dropped a non-conference baseball game to visiting McDaniel, 10-4.

Eight different Blazers had a hit in the contest. Drake Friend (Gladwyne, Pa. / Harriton) was the only Hood player to reach base more than once. He was hit by a pitch in the third and singled in the fifth.

The Green Terror led 1-0 after two innings, before a Hood error opened the door for a three-run third to make it 4-0.

Michael Casper carried a no-hitter into the fifth, but Chris Shriver (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) crashed the party with a double down the line in right field. After Shriver stole third, Friend knocked him in with an RBI single to right.

The two teams traded single runs in the sixth. In the top of the inning, Mitchell McVerry singled, stole second and third; and came home on a base hit by Sean Sivo. Hood answered in the bottom half, when Cameron Esposito (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional) reached on an error to lead off the inning. With two outs and Esposito on second, the Green Terror brought in reliever Calvin Benevento. The first batter he faced, Dylan Johnson (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring), poked a single into right center to make it 5-2.

Another three-run inning by McDaniel in the seventh broke the game open. McVerry had a two-run single drive that extended the lead to 8-2. A two-run double in the eighth by Marty Windisch finished the scoring for the Green Terror.

Josh Gall (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) had an RBI double in the eighth and pinch hitter Nat Puryear (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) had a run scoring double of his own in the ninth for Hood's final two runs.

Jake Franke (Lisbon, Md. / Glenelg) took the loss, but allowed just two earned runs in 5.2 innings. He struck out seven and allowed 10 hits and two walks.

Casper recorded the win and pitched 5.2 innings of two-hit baseball. He did not walk a batter and allowed two runs, one earned, and struck out four.

Six players had multi-hit games for McDaniel. Sivo led the way, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a walk. He scored three times and stole a pair of bases. Cameron Bahr went 3-for-4, drove in three and scored twice.

Hood has a quick turnaround with a doubleheader at Penn St.-Mont Alto on Tuesday, March 31 at 2 p.m.
