Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - Hood College freshman Kayli Paugh (Elkridge, Md. / Howard) had a pitching debut to remember, throwing a complete game and hitting a home run to drive in the winning runs as the Blazers split two games to open the season.
In the opener, Stockton downed Hood 11-2. Against Simmons in the nightcap, the Blazers scored a 3-2 victory.
Hood is 1-1 on the season.
STOCKTON 11, HOOD 2 (5 INNINGS)
A big first inning proved too much to overcome as Stockton handed the Blazers an 11-2 loss in Hood's season opener.
The Ospreys had six runners cross home plate in the bottom of the first inning. After the Blazers scored in the second, a five-run third by Stockton put the game out of reach.
Hood benefited from two Stockton errors and a wild pitch to score in the second inning. Cady Baer (Frederick, Md. / Catoctin) led off the inning with a walk and later scored on the wild pitch. Another error in the fourth by the Ospreys allowed the Blazers' other run to come home. Kristen Scott (Rockville, Md. / Walter Johnson) doubled with one out and scored on an error by the second baseman.
Of Stockton's 12 hits, 11 were singles. The only extra base hit of the afternoon drove in the Ospreys' first two runs, a first inning double by Dominique Dorris.
Samantha Shockey had three hits and picked up the win in the circle for Stockton. At the plate, she drove in two and scored twice. She pitched three innings, allowing one run on one hit, walking two and striking out three.
Keerstie Robinson (Windsor, Pa. / Northeastern) took the loss. The junior pitched the first 3.1 innings, allowed 12 hits and walked four. Beth Laque (Berlin, Md. / Stephen Decatur) tossed the final two-thirds of an inning in relief.
Stockton improved to 3-1.
HOOD 3, SIMMONS 2
Paugh struck out eight batters and allowed just three hits, while her fifth inning two-run homer proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win.
The Blazers got on the board in the bottom of the first. Kaylee Krietz (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin) led off with a walk and stole second. Ashley Fourcade (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) ripped a two-out, RBI double to left for a 1-0 lead.
The Sharks used a Hood error and three walks to score twice in the third. Jess Uschmann knocked in a run with a fielder's choice, but the Blazers misplayed a throw and two runs crossed home plate.
In the bottom of the fifth, Scott singled through the left side to lead off the inning. Paugh followed and helped her own cause when she knocked the first pitch she saw over the fence in right center for a 3-2 lead.
Paugh then turned Simmons away in order in both the sixth and seventh innings close out the game.
She pitched seven innings and allowed three hits and three walks, striking out eight for the complete game win. At the dish, she went 1-for-2 with a homer and two runs batted in.
Krietz walked twice and stole a pair of bases.
Amanda Cordeiro took the loss for the Sharks, letting in three runs on five hits and two walks. She struck out two. Lauren Backhaus struck out two in two innings of no-hit relief.
After going 27-10 last season, Simmons falls to 0-3 to start 2015.
Hood will look for more wins on Tuesday, March 10 when they take on Lake Forest at 1 p.m. and Wheaton (Ill.) at 3 p.m.
