Box Score 2 FREDERICK, Md. - Hood dropped both ends of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader to visiting Widener. The Blazers fell 4-0 in the opener and 10-1 in six innings in the second game.
Hood honored its lone senior, Cady Baer (Frederick, Md. / Catoctin), before the games. She went 2-for-3 in the second game.
WIDENER 4, HOOD 0
The Pride's Alexis Schengrund entered the game with an earned run average under 1.00 and showed why, tossing a two-hit shutout.
Widener jumped ahead 2-0 in the third. Carissa Harris knocked in a run with a single. When she was thrown out stealing second, Alie Alkins snuck home from third for the second run.
Single runs in the sixth and seventh innings put the game out of reach.
Sophia Leaman (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal) led off the game with a single for Hood and Jess Sedgwick (Fairfield, Conn. / Cushing Academy) had a two-out single in the second.
The Blazers' best chance came in the sixth inning. Leaman led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. After she was cut down on a fielder's choice, Hood would get runners on first and second before Schengrund worked out of the jam.
Schengrund struck out 10 and walked three.
Kayli Paugh (Elkridge, Md. / Howard) took the loss for Hood. She went five innings and allowed three earned runs. Beth Laque (Berlin, Md. / Stephen Decatur) tossed two innings of scoreless relief.
WIDENER 10, HOOD 1 (6 innings)
Ally Horvath went 4-for-4 at the plate and pitched four innings of one-hit softball to lead the Pride to the sweep.
An error by Hood opened the door to a four-run second for Widener. The Pride added three more in the fourth, including a two-run homer by Alkins. A three-run sixth by Widener ended the game.
The Blazers scored once in the bottom of the sixth. Leaman reached on an error and scored on a single by Ashley Fourcade (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery).
Baer had two of the Blazers' four hits in the game.
Alkins had three hits and scored three times. Harris added four RBIs.
Leaman took the loss for Hood, allowing four earned runs in four innings.
Hood looks to get back in the win column on April 17 when Stevenson visits for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.
