Hood Takes Season Series from LVC with Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ANNVILLE, Pa. - A pair of bases loaded walks in the eighth inning lifted Hood College to a 7-5 win over Lebanon Valley in the opener, but the Dutchmen won a pitcher's duel in the nightcap, 3-1.

The game one win gave the Blazers their first series win over a Commonwealth Conference opponent. Hood defeated LVC 17-12 in the first game of the three-game set on April 24. The victory allowed Hood to reach double digits wins in their first season.

Chris Shriver (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader.

HOOD 7, LEBANON VALLEY 5 (8 INNINGS)

After the Dutchmen intentionally walked Dylan Johnson (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) to load the bases with two outs in the eighth, Zach Scheuerman (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) and John Cartegena (Brookfield, Conn. / Immaculate) walked to score the winning runs in a 7-5 victory.

Hood jumped ahead 2-0 in the third after an RBI groundout by Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) and a single by Johnson that scored Cameron Esposito (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional). Lebanon Valley responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring all five of its runs. Brett Fundell hit a three-run homer to give the Dutchmen the lead. Run-scoring hits by Mike Puglisi and Colin Albright stretched the lead to 5-2.

The Blazers got one run back in the sixth. Tyler Cook (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove) walked, but ball four was wild and Cartegena scurried home to make it 5-3.

Shriver, fresh off a five-hit game on Friday, sent the teams to extra innings with a two-run, two-out single to tie the score at 5-5 in the seventh. Johnson and Gall both walked in the inning; and Johnson and pinch runner Stefan Miller (Cumberland, Md. / Bishop Walsh) came home on Shriver's game-tying single.

Hood continued its two-out dramatics in the eighth. Esposito reached on an infield single and Warrenfeltz followed with a single to center. Johnson was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Scheuerman, who entered the game at catcher after Miller ran for Gall, walked to drive in the winning run. Cartagena followed with a base on balls to put the Blazers on top 7-5.

Jackson Slotterback (Arnold, Md. / St. Mary's) picked up the win in relief after pitching a perfect seventh inning. Jake Franke (Lisbon, Md. / Glenelg) notched his first career save with a scoreless eighth. Ryan Atkinson (Hamburg, Pa. / Hamburg) started and threw the first six innings. He allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks.

Shriver went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Esposito had two hits and scored twice. Johnson reached base three times via a hit and two walks.

Fundell took the loss in relief. Hallowed two runs on four hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. Michael Houseal started and went six innings, but did not factor into the decision.

LEBANON VALLEY 3, HOOD 1

The Dutchmen's Jason Barthold outdueled Hood's Andrew Catone (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) as LVC salvaged the split with a 3-1 win.

Catone pitched 5.2 innings and scattered seven hits and two walks. He allowed just three runs and struck out four batters.

Barthold, meanwhile, surrendered just five hits and one run in 6.1 innings. He walked one and struck out three.

Lebanon Valley scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings. Fundell had an RBI single to knock in the first run, and Jonathan Harned drove in Daniel Doyle for a 2-0 lead in the second. In the fifth, Phill Dohner scored on a fielder's choice to make it a three-run lead.

Hood finally broke through against Barthold in the sixth. Three straight two-out singles by Warrenfeltz, Johnson and Gall scored a run to make it a two-run game.

The Blazers threatened in the seventh. With two outs, Cook and pinch hitter Nat Puryear (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) singled to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Dohner managed to escape the jam and closed the door.

Esposito doubled for the Blazers' lone extra base hit of the day.

Fundell and Doyle had two hits apiece for the Dutchmen.

Hood travels to Penn St.-Altoona on April 26 for a doubleheader before hosting a twinbill against Lancaster Bible on April 27.
