Box Score CHESTER, Pa. - The Hood College volleyball team picked up a key 3-1 win at Widener in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.
Set scores were 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 27-25.
The win was the Blazers fourth in a row, the longest streak for Hood since the 2000 season. It improved the Blazers to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in the MAC Commonwealth at the midway point of the conference schedule.
Payton Belella (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) had her fifth 40-plus assist effort of the season with a match-high 42. Kari Betson (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) led three Blazers with double figure kills with 15, and added 10 digs. Elena Young (Hagerstown, Md. / South Hagerstown) had 13 kills and Caroline Kinna (Frederick, Md. / Walkersville) added a dozen.
Kathryn Jones (Newfane, N.Y. / Newfane) served up five aces and tied Brenna Elizondo (Littleton, Colo. / Heritage) for the team-lead with 16 digs. Courtney Hutchinson (Burtonsville, Md. / Blake) led the squad with three blocks.
A 10-point run behind the serve of Elizondo erased a 13-6 deficit in the first set as the Blazers built a 16-13 lead. In the second set, Hood trailed just 22-21 after an attack error by the Pride, but Widener was able to close out the set and tie the match at one set apiece.
Hood rallied again to come from behind in each of the next two sets to capture the match. Widener led 14-10 in set three before an ace by Jones and four attack errors by the Pride gave Hood a 15-14 advantage. Widener regrouped and claimed a 20-16 lead on a kill by Nicole Dorman, but the Blazers were not done. Young had both of her aces on the evening during a five-point surge that put Hood on top 21-20. After the Pride tied the set at 22-22, kills by Jones, Kinna and Betson put the Blazers ahead two sets to one.
With Widener leading 15-11 in the fourth set, an eight-point run gave the lead to Hood. Jones served up three aces in the spurt. Widener was able to tie the score at 25-25 before a Pride service error and a kill by Young resulted in the Blazers taking the set and the match.
Natalie Winn led Widener with 14 kills and Dorman added 11. Sabrina Barbieri dished out 40 assists. Janie Kallnock added a match-high six blocks. Elliott had 14 digs.
The Blazers will look to stay in the win column when they travel to the MAC Crossover on October 3 at King's.
