Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Hood College volleyball team picked up its first win of the year with a 3-1 victory over Mary Baldwin at the EMU Invitational. In the nightcap, Goucher defeated the Blazers in straight sets.
Set scores against the Fighting Squirrels were 26-24, 25-19, 24-26, 26-24. Against the Gophers, scores were 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.
Caroline Kinna (Hagerstown, Md. / South Hagerstown) had 17 total kills and eight aces in the two matches, while Elena Young (Hagerstown, Md. / South Hagerstown) had eight aces.
Hood 3, Mary Baldwin 1
Hood used 17 service aces to pull out a hard-fought, four-set victory, with three of the four sets going to a 26th point.
In the first set, Hood trailed 23-17, but a pair of aces by Kinna helped start a rally that allowed the Blazers to come back for the win.
Hood trailed again in the second set, 14-10, but Young served up a pair of aces to fuel a 15-5 run to close the set.
After Mary Baldwin took a 26-24 score in the third set, Hood once again came from behind in the decisive fourth set. The Fighting Squirrels led 18-13 before the Blazers reeled off seven straight points.
Kinna led the service attack with seven aces and Young served up five aces.
Gabriela Enriquez (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) led Hood with nine kills and added 10 digs. Kathryn Jones (Newfane, N.Y. / Newfane) dished out 21 assists and led the team with a dozen digs. Renee Reus (Frederick, Md. / Urbana) added 11 digs. Courtney Hutchinson (Burtonsville, Md. / Blake) had a team-high three blocks.
MBC's Katelyn Rice led all players with 13 kills. Reilly Kelly had 26 assists.
Goucher 3, Hood 0
Kinna had a Blazer season-high with 11 kills, but Goucher managed to pick up the sweep.
Young added eight kills and three aces. Jones had a double-double with 24 assists and 11 digs. Enriquez had 10 digs.
For Goucher, Kelly Budge had seven kills. Sarah Johnson added 22 assists. Meredith Johnson's 14 digs were a match-high.
Hood wraps up action at the EMU Invitational on Saturday, September 4 against Methodist and Salem.
