Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Hood College baseball team dropped its season opener 12-2 to Marymount (Va.) in a non-conference game played at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) went 2-for-3. Josh Gall (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) and Chris Shriver (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) doubled. Shriver scored both of the Blazers' runs. Drake Friend (Gladwyne, Pa. / Harriton) singled and walked twice.
Hood struck first with a run in the top of the second. Shriver led off the inning with a double and scored on an RBI ground out by Quinn Fulton (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley).
The Saints tied the score in the third, then broke things open in the fifth. The Blazers committed three errors in the fifth to open the door for a six-run inning.
Hood cut the deficit to 7-2 in the sixth. Shriver drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Fulton. Shriver later scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Marymount put the game out of reach with two runs in the seventh. Michael Wade homered as part of a three-run eighth to cap the scoring.
Travis Schweizer (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) started and went four innings. He allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits and a pair of walks. He struck out three and took the loss. Nate Luscombe (Harleysville, Pa. / Souderton), one of four relievers used by the Blazers, pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.
Ben Berczek and Brandon Orbe had two hits apiece for the Saints. Brandon Savage drove in three.
Sean O'Connell pitched four innings, allowing three hits. He struck out four, but walked five. Scott Robison came on in relief and picked up the win. He threw 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and walked two, resulting in an unearned run.
The Blazers look to bounce back when they host Lancaster Bible in a non-conference doubleheader on Feb. 26 at 12 p.m.
