Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Hood College fell in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Catholic, dropping the front end 4-3 and the nightcap 5-2.
Hood allowed just one earned run on the day and the pitching staff was scored upon in just two innings all afternoon, but the Cardinals rallied for enough runs each time to pick up the win.
GAME ONE: CATHOLIC 4, HOOD 3
Travis Schweizer (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run, but took the loss. He allowed just four hits - all singles - and two walks, while striking out three.
Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and a double.
Both teams scored all of their runs in the fourth inning. In the top half, Drake Friend (Gladwyne, Pa. / Harriton) singled and moved to third on a Tyler Cook (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove) double. Cam Esposito (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional) followed with an RBI single before Warrenfeltz stroked a two-run double to make it 3-0.
In the bottom of the inning, the Cardinals benefitted from three errors and took the lead, 4-3.
The complete game was Schweizer's second of the season.
Sean Carroll picked up the win in relief for the Cardinals. Catholic's four hits in the game were by four different players.
GAME TWO: CATHOLIC 5, HOOD 2
After a big first inning by the Cardinals, five Hood relievers allowed just two hits and two walks over 6.1 innings of work.
Hood rallied in the seventh with a two-run double by Quinn Fulton (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) that scored Warrenfeltz and Paul Quattrone (Laurel, Md. / Reservoir), but the Cardinals managed to escape with the win.
Two errors aided the Catholic in the bottom of the first. Paul Burmester had the big hit in the inning with a grand slam to make it 5-0.
Nate Luscombe (Harleysville, Pa. / Souderton) closed out the first inning and allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings. Connor Henniges (Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore) pitched a perfect fourth. Riley Fitzgerald (Eden, Vt. / Lamoille Union) allowed Catholic to load the bases in the fifth, but Blake Krisan (Mount Dora, Fla. / Mount Dora Bible) came on to work out of the jam. Michael Hernandez (Lancaster, Pa. / Hempfield) threw a scoreless sixth.
Karan Sinha pitched six shutout innings for the win. Andrew Catone (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) took the loss.
Quattrone and Warrenfeltz both walked in the seventh against Jon Mierzwa before scoring on Fulton's double.
Hood will look to get back in the win column on Monday, Mar. 14 when Penn St.-Mont Alto visits.
