Box Score 2 CHESTER, Pa. - The Hood College softball team bounced back from a 3-2 loss in 10 innings to take game two, 6-4, at Widener in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.
Kristy Erfurdt (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin) was 4-for-6 on the day with four runs scored, two walks, two doubles, a home run and three runs batted in.
Kayli Paugh (Elkridge, Md. / Howard) and Sophia Leaman (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal) threw complete games.
Hood sits at 4-4 overall and 3-1 in MAC Commonwealth action.
Game One: Widener 3, Hood 2 (10 innings)
Neither starting pitcher allowed a run until Erfurdt hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10th, but the Pride rebounded for three runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Erfurdt went 2-for-4 in the game with a double and a home run.
Paugh threw a complete game, pitching 9.1 innings. She scattered nine hits and a walk, striking out three.
In the end, she was outdueled by Alexis Schengrund, who allowed just three hits in 10 innings and struck out 16.
Paugh pitched around runners in scoring position in the third, sixth and seventh innings to push the game to extra innings. The Blazers' biggest threat came in the top of the seventh when Kaylee Krietz (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin) singled and moved to third on Erfurdt's one-out double. Schengrund retired the next two batters to escape the jam.
In the top of the 10th, with Maddy Collins (Bel Air, Md. / Mercy) on second, Erfurdt hit one over the fence in left field for a 2-0 lead.
Widener, however, rallied in the bottom of the inning. Ally Horvath and Lauren Del Romano had RBI singles to tie the game with one out. Horvath, who moved up to third on Del Romano's base hit, scored on a wild pitch for the walk-off win.
Horvath was 3-for-5 in the game.
GAME TWO: HOOD 6, WIDENER 4
Four different players had RBI doubles to lead the Blazers to the split.
Erfurdt went 2-for-2 with a double, three runs scored, two walks and an RBI. Paugh had three hits and Jess Sedgwick (Fairfield, Conn. / Cushing Academy) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Hood jumped ahead 2-0 in the first, when Erfurdt doubled in a run and scored on an RBI double by Roo Saglimbeni (Woodbine, Md. / Glenelg).
In the third, Sedgwick doubled to score two runs and stretched the lead to 4-0. The Pride cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning, but the Blazers bounced back with a two-run fourth.
Ashley Fourcade (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) doubled to score Erfurdt and later scored on an RBI hit by Paugh.
Leaman allowed four runs on seven hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Horvath took the loss, allowing four runs, all earned, in 2.2 innings.
Heather Forward and Katie Sterling had two hits apiece.
The Blazers host Houghton in the home opener on Mar. 18.
