Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA - Hood College and Arcadia locked in a pair of pitchers' duels in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader with the Knights eking out a sweep, 2-1 and 3-1, respectively.
Jake Franke (Lisbon, Md. / Glenelg) and Connor Henniges (Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore) limited Arcadia to just five hits in the opener, while Ryan Atkinson (Hamburg, Pa. / Hamburg) tossed three innings of shut out relief in game two. The Knights, however, got a complete game from Jason Goldberg in the opener before three pitchers combined to allow just one unearned run in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: ARCADIA 2, HOOD 1
Franke pitched into the fifth and allowed just four hits, but Goldberg pitched a complete game three-hitter for Arcadia.
Henniges came on for Franke in the fifth and tossed the final 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit. Neither pitcher walked a batter.
Hood took an early lead with a run in the second inning. Dylan Johnson (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) singled and scored later in the inning on an outfield error by the Knights.
Single runs in the fourth and fifth for Arcadia proved to be the difference. Michael Nessel had a one-out double in the fourth and scored on a single by Justin Chasmar to tie the game. In the fifth, Nick Todero doubled in a run to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.
Johnson, Drake Friend (Gladwyne, Pa. / Harriton) and Josh Gall (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) had hits for the Blazers.
Jordan Draude added a double for Arcadia.
GAME TWO: ARCADIA 3, HOOD 1
Arcadia scored once in the first and again in the second and held off the Blazers for the sweep.
After the Knights scored off starter Andrew Catone (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep), Atkinson came on to start the third inning and allowed just two hits over three scoreless innings.
Draude knocked in a run in the first and Bryan Gillen's second inning double drove in George Pagan for a 2-0 lead.
Hood cut the deficit in half in the fifth. With two outs, Cam Esposito (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional) reached on an error and moved to second on a base hit by Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown). Gall ripped a single to center field to bring Esposito home.
An error aided Arcadia in the sixth as the Knights went ahead 3-1.
Esposito had a hit and a walk for the Blazers.
Joel Bartoni pitched the first five innings for Arcadia, allowing five hits and one run. Michael Ferrence tossed a scoreless third of an inning and Christopher Keesser recorded the save over 1.2 innings.
Pagan was the only player for either team in either game to record a multi-hit game. He went 2-for-2 in the second game.
Hood travels to Southern Virginia on Mar. 21.
