Box Score READING, Pa. - Hood College broke open a tie game with a five-run eighth to take a 10-5 final from Albright in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.
Josh Gall (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) finished 2-for-4 with his first homer of the year and scored twice. Dylan Johnson (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) had two hits and drove in two. Cam Esposito (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional), Drake Friend (Gladwyne, Pa. / Harriton) and Chris Shriver (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) had two hits apiece.
Ryan Atkinson (Hamburg, Pa. / Hamburg) picked up the win in relief. Matthias Teufel (Vienna, Austria / Sacre Coeur) pitched two scoreless innings to finish the game.
With things tied at 5-5 entering the eighth, Wayne Baldwin (Mount Airy, Md. / Chapelgate Christian Academy) singled to start the inning. After a base hit by Johnson, Friend drove in Baldwin with a single for what proved to be the winning run. Shriver followed with a bunt single, and an error on the play scored pinch runner Paul Quattrone (Laurel, Md. / Reservoir). Back-to-back fielder's choices by Tyler Cook (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove) and Esposito drove in runs for a 9-5 lead. Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) knocked in the final run with a single to center field.
The Lions put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but Esposito made a diving catch in center to end the game.
Esposito started a three-run first inning for the Blazers with an infield single to lead off the game. Johnson had a two-run base hit in the inning and a wild pitch allowed the third run to score. Albright strung together four hits in the bottom of the inning to cut it to 3-2.
Gall's homer in the third made it 4-2 in favor of Hood, but Albright answered in the bottom of the inning. An RBI ground out by Jesse Fikslin and a home run by Tanner Brescancine tied the game at 4-4.
An infield, RBI single by Nathan Kessler (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) put the Blazers ahead 5-4 in the sixth, but once again Albright answered. Jeff Yordy led off the seventh with a single, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Noah Beebe tied the game with a single that drove home Yordy, Atkinson entered the game and pitched out of the jam without further damage.
Brescancine had three hits in the game, including a homer, and drove in two. Beebe doubled among his three hits. Fikslin had two hits and two RBIs.
Connor Travis took the loss in relief, allowing three runs in one inning of work.
Neither starting pitcher figured into the decision. Travis Schweizer (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) pitched 6.1 innings for Hood, striking out four without a walk. He allowed five runs on 10 hits. Albright's Trevor Mastria gave up five runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out seven over six innings.
The two teams play a doubleheader hosted by Hood at Nymeo Field in Frederick on Apr. 2 at noon.
