FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College fell in both ends of a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader to visiting Alvernia, 9-0 and 7-1.

GAME ONE: ALVERNIA 9, HOOD 0

A big fifth inning proved to be the difference, as the Crusaders scored nine times to account for all the game's scoring.

Cam Esposito (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional) doubled and was one of six Blazers with a hit in the game. Wayne Baldwin (Mount Airy, Md. / Chapelgate Christian Academy) singled and walked.

Nate Luscombe (Harleysville, Pa. / Souderton) blanked Alvernia for four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth and took the loss. He gave up five runs, four hits, walked four and struck out two. 

Cameron Coons went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in. Chris Burns, James Bertolotti and Jon Strouse each drove in two runs. 

Thomas Malik pitched six shutout innings for the win. 

GAME TWO: ALVERNIA 7, HOOD 1

Hood took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Alvernia came back with two runs in the second to secure the series sweep.

Baldwin ripped a one-out triple in the bottom of the first and scored on single by Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown). 

After the Crusaders took the lead in the top of the second, Burns made it 3-1 the next inning with a solo home run. Alvernia scored twice in the fourth and brought in single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Burns went 3-for-3 with a home run. Bertolotti drove in two. 

John Catchmark scattered five hits in a complete game win. 

Jake Franke (Lisbon, Md. / Glenelg) took the loss, allowing five runs in five innings. 

Hood hosts East. Mennonite on Apr. 13.
