Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball team scored seven runs in the fourth inning and went on to win 10-7 over visiting Eastern Mennonite in non-conference play.
Tyler Cook (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove) went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs batted in. Chris Shriver (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) finished 3-for-5 and scored two runs. Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown), Josh Gall (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) and Nathan Kessler (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) each had two-hit days as the Blazers pounded out 15 base hits.
Connor Henniges (Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore) picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief. Travis Schweizer (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the first and stretched it to 3-0 in the fourth on a two-run home run by Adam Marston.
Hood struck back with a big inning in the bottom of the fourth to capture the lead, sending 11 batters to the plate. Gall led off with a single and walks by Dylan Johnson (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) and Wayne Baldwin (Mount Airy, Md. / Chapelgate Christian Academy) loaded the bases with no one out. Shriver got the Blazers on the scoreboard with an RBI single. A sacrifice fly by Drake Friend (Gladwyne, Pa. / Harriton) made it 3-2.
Kessler followed with a perfectly placed bunt single that scored Baldwin to tie the game at 3-3. Paul Quattrone (Laurel, Md. / Reservoir) gave Hood the lead with an RBI groundout and Cook ripped a run scoring double to make it 5-3. Eastern Mennonite made a pitching change, but Cody Sager was welcomed by an RBI double by Gall and a run-scoring single by Warrenfeltz for a 7-3 edge.
A bases loaded walk by EMU's Nic Love cut it to 7-4 in the top of the fifth, but the Blazers responded with a three-run inning in the bottom half. Three straight one-out singles by Shriver, Friend and Kessler made it 8-4. Friend and Kessler executed a double-steal and the ball got away at second, allowing Friend to come home. Cook made it 10-4 with an RBI single.
Eastern Mennonite cut it to 10-5 in the seventh and continued to rally the following inning. Patrick Love led off the inning with a solo home run. Jared Jordan followed with a triple and later scored to make it 10-7.
Schweizer allowed a lead off runner in the ninth, but retired the next three batters for the save.
Chris Devine (Frederick, Md. / Urbana) got the start and went 4 2/3 innings before giving way to Henniges. Devine allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits and five walks. He struck out three. Matthias Teufel (Vienna, Austria / Sacre Coeur) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Jordan went 3-for-4 with a triple. Marston had two hits, including his homer, and drove in three. Zach Roberts had a pair of hits.
Jake Brown took the loss, allowing six runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Hood hosts Messiah on Apr. 15, then travels to the Falcons for a doubleheader on Apr. 16.
