Box Score CHESTER, Pa. - The Hood College pitching staff did not allow an earned run, but Widener took advantage fielding miscues to win 3-2 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth competition.
Jake Franke (Lisbon, Md. / Glenelg) started and did not allow an earned run in six innings. He scattered four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out two, allowing one unearned run. Connor Henniges (Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore) took the loss, allowing two unearned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Matthias Teufel (Vienna, Austria / Sacre Coeur) closed out the game with a scoreless 2/3 of an inning.
Nathan Kessler (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double. Josh Gall (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) walked twice and Dylan Johnson (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) doubled.
The Blazers scored their run in the top of the first. Cam Esposito (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional) led off the game with a single down the line in left. A passed ball and an error moved him all the way to third; and Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) knocked him in with an RBI ground out.
An outfield error in the bottom of the third allowed the Pride to tie the game at 1-1. A two-run single by Nick D'Alessandro in the eighth put Widener ahead 3-1.
Hood rallied in the top of the ninth. Johnson led off the inning with a double. With two outs, Kessler hit the ball down the left field line. Johnson came home, but Kessler was thrown out trying to stretch the base hit into a double.
D'Alessandro, Michael Elfreth and Nicholas Enos had two hits apiece for the Pride.
Josh Lafferty threw a complete game for the win. He allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks. He struck out six.
The two teams finish the season series with doubleheader at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium on Saturday, Apr. 23.
