Box Score 2 FREDERICK, Md. - Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) drove in five runs in the opener and Nate Luscombe (Harleysville, Pa. / Souderton) threw a complete game in the nightcap as the Hood College baseball team split a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader with Widener.
The Blazers lost the opener 10-7, but rebounded for a 4-3 win in game two.
Warrenfeltz was 3-for-4, finishing just a triple short of the cycle, with five runs batted in during the first game. Cam Esposito (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional) and Nathan Kessler (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) both had two hits in each game. Luscombe struck out four, did not walk a batter and scattered seven hits for his fourth win of the year.
GAME ONE: WIDENER 10, HOOD 7
Hood scored six times in the first two innings, but the Pride slowly chipped away to pick up the win.
The Blazers' top four hitters combined to go 9-for-16. Warrenfeltz led the way with three hits, while Esposito, Kessler and Josh Gall (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) had two hits apiece.
Hood scored four times in the first. Warrenfeltz knocked in Esposito and Kessler with a two-run single to put the Blazers on the board. Chris Shriver (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) had sacrifice fly and Tyler Cook (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove) drove in a run with a fielder's choice.
Warrenfeltz picked up two more RBIs in the second inning with a two-run double that scored Esposito and Kessler to make it 6-0.
After Widener cut it to 6-4, Warrenfeltz led off the fifth with a home run to center field for a 7-4 edge.
In the top of the sixth, the Pride erupted for five runs on three hits to take the lead.
Travis Schweizer (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) took the loss.
Kye McKelvy was the winner, overcoming seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. Elliott Snyder picked up the save.
Greg McDonough had three hits and scored three times. Bob Barnett had two hits and drove in three.
GAME TWO: HOOD 4, WIDENER 3
A three-run third inning helped lead Hood to the win.
Dylan Johnson (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk.
The Blazers trailed 1-0 entering the bottom the third, but scored three times to take the lead. Kessler tied the game with an infield, RBI single. Warrenfeltz drove in a run with an RBI ground out to give Hood the lead. Gall followed with a run scoring double to make it 3-1.
In the fifth, Warrenfeltz scored on a Shriver single to give the Blazers a three-run lead.
The Pride pulled within one in the sixth with a pair of runs. They loaded the bases in the seventh, but Luscombe pitched out of the jam to seal the complete game victory.
Joe Santone threw a complete game, but took the loss. Justin Healey had two hits.
Hood hosts PSU-Altoona on Apr. 25.
