Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. - The Hood College softball team split a pair of games at the Triangle Classic, defeating Maryville (Tenn.) 2-1 before falling 13-5 to a Salisbury squad receiving votes in the national polls.

Inside the Box Score
- Kayli Paugh pitched a complete game and drove in the winning runs. Inside the circle, she allowed just six hits. At the plate, her two-run double in the fifth proved to be the difference.
- Jess Sedgwick had two hits, while Kristen Scott tripled and walked.
How it Happened
- The Fighting Scots struck first with a run in the fourth. Aly Snider doubled to lead off the top of the inning and scored on a one-out base hit by Morgan Brewer.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Hood took advantage of a pair of errors to take the lead. Scott and Kristy Erfurdt reached base on the miscues and with two outs, Paugh ripped a double to put the Blazers in front 2-1.
- Maryville threatened in the seventh when Ashton Hayden walked with two outs, but Shelby Alcorn threw her out trying to steal second to end the game.
Notes
- Snider doubled twice in the game for the Fighting Scots.
- Nicole Blackburn was the hard-luck loser. She did not allow an earned run and scattered four hits.

How it Happened
- After the Sea Gulls scored once in the bottom of the first, Hood scored twice in the top of the second. Roo Saglimbeni led off with a walk and back-to-back singles by Sedgwick and Leaman brought her home. Sedgwick crossed home on a sacrifice fly by Kaitlin Barron for the lead.
- Salisbury answered right back in the bottom of the inning with three runs via run-scoring hits by Leanne Collins and Kristen Yanarella.
- The tug-of-war for the lead continued in the fifth when the teams traded runs. Saglimbeni drove in Erfurdt and Scott with a single to tie the game at 4-4. A double by Sedgwick knocked in Maddy Collins for a 5-4 lead.
- The Sea Gulls used the long ball to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the inning. Courtney Tate hit a grand slam and Caitlin Lake added a two-run blast as part of a seven-run inning to make it 11-5.
- Two more runs in the sixth for Salisbury stopped the game.
Notes
- Leaman took the loss for Hood. She allowed nine earned runs in five innings.
- Shannon Powell, the second of three pitchers for Salisbury, picked up the win. She allowed three runs, none earned, in 2.2 innings of relief.
- Collins, Tate and Yanarella each had two hits for the Sea Gulls.
