Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Hood College softball team won two more games on its spring break trip, defeating Bethany (W.Va.) 1-0 in nine innings and Fredonia 5-2.

Pitching carried the day with both Kayli Paugh and Sophia Leaman pitching complete game wins with double-digit strikeout totals. Paugh tied the school record with 12 strikeouts against the Bison, while Leaman fanned 10 against the Blue Devils.

HOOD 1, BETHANY (W.Va.) 0 (9 INNINGS)

  • The Blazers had just two hits in the game, but Kristen Scott's double in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in Alex Herschman for the winning run. Herschman had been placed on second as part of the international tie breaker to start the inning.
  • Paugh pitched a four-hit shutout, did not walk a batter and struck out 12 to tie the school record. Her counterpart, Cassie Weiss kept pace all day. She went 8.1 innings and struck out 19.
  • Paugh had worked around the international tie breaker in the top of the ninth. After Bethany bunted the runner to third, the junior got the next two batters to line out to shortstop to end the inning.
  • A seventh inning single by Jess Sedgwick was Hood's only other hit in the game.
  • Sammie Weiss had two of the Bison's four hits.

HOOD 5, FREDONIA 2

  • Leaman went the distance, allowing just two runs on eight hits and two walks. She struck out a career-high 10.
  • She helped her own cause at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Scott, Sedgwick and Paugh had two hits apiece.
  • Hood scored once in each of the first two innings. Kristy Erfurdt and Sedgwick had back-to-back doubles in the first inning to score a run. Leaman then led off the second with a home run to center for a 2-0 lead.
  • Erin Mushtare scored in the fourth and drove in a run in the fifth to tie the game for the Blue Devils.
  • Hood responded with a three-run sixth. Leaman drove in the winning run with a single that allowed Paugh to cross the plate. Katelyn Long knocked in Leaman with a RBI single and scored on a base hit by Scott.
  • Sammy Seegar took the loss for Fredonia. She allowed all five runs in 5.2 innings, striking out five.
  • Mushtare, Khee Nance and Nikki Lent each had two hits.
