Softball Uses Home Runs to Split with York (Pa.)

FREDERICK, Md.- Hood College softball (9-4) split the day with York (10-6). The Blazers lost the first contest 5-0 but rebounded and took the second 5-3. The bats were hot for both teams, as both teams hit a combined total of five home runs over the course of the day.

Kayli Paugh took the loss in the first contest, throwing a complete game with four strikeouts. Paugh went for redemption in the second contest and batted in three runs for the Blazers, including a two-run homer.

Sophia Leaman threw a complete game in the second contest, including four strikeouts and a solo home run to help her cause and earn the win.

York 5, Hood 0

  • York scored all five of their runs in the top of the first. With one out and the bases loaded, Haley Hirn singled, bringing in two runs. Katelyn Mehrling doubled to bring in another run. Ashley Werner singled to bring Hirn in to score the fifth run.
  • Paugh settled down after the first and threw six scoreless innings.
  • Kristy Erfurdt went 3 for 3 for the Blazers.
  • Ginger Lewis (2-3) earned the win, going seven innings with five strikeouts.

Hood 5, York 3

  • Paugh, who was 2 for 3 in the game, got her chance for redemption in the first inning with a single to third bringing Kristen Scott in to score.
  • Mehrling responded for the Spartans with a solo homer in the top of the second.
  • Paugh answered in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer to left field, scoring Jess Sedgwick to take the lead 3-1.
  • In the top of the fourth, York tied the game 3-3 with back-to-back home runs by Carleigh Ruleman and Hirn.
  • With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Leaman helped her own cause for the Blazers with a solo home run to deep center field. Kaitlin Barron added insurance with a sacrifice fly to center which brought Katelyn Long home.
  • Melissa Jurkiewicz (6-3) took the loss in relief for Mehrling.
