Baseball Outslugged by McDaniel in Extra Innings

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball team jumped out to an early lead, but McDaniel fought back for a 16-12 win in 10 innings. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Josh Gall had three hits, including his fourth home run of the year. The junior recorded his 100th hit in the game to become the third player in program history to reach the milestone.
  • Cam Esposito doubled and tripled. Brooks Warrenfeltz scored three times. Wayne Baldwin and Brad Sawyer each had a hit and two walks. 
  • Gall's homer was one of seven extra base hits for Hood. 
  • Dylan Johnson allowed three earned runs in six innings. 

How it Happened

  • Hood scored three times in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Esposito led off with a double and scored during an error on a bunt single by Jordan Patterson. A wild pitch and a RBI single by Gall resulted in runs for Hood before the end of the inning.

  • McDaniel tied the game with a three-run second, but Hood erupted for seven runs in the third. Josh Greenberg and Nathan Kessler had RBI doubles in the outburst, while Drake Friend added a two-run triple. Hood led 8-3 before an out was made in the inning and 10-3 by the time it was over.
  • Gall hit a blast to right field in the fifth to make it 12-3, but the Green Terror began to chip away. A two-run triple by Mike Dunn in the sixth fueled a three-run inning that cut the lead to 12-6. Tim Griest homered to lead off the eighth, part of a five-run frame that made it 12-11.
  • Dunn drove in Griest with a two-out single in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Nick Valori knocked in what proved to be the winning run in the 10th, but McDaniel added three more to take a 16-12 lead.

Notes

  • Griest went 4 for 5 and finished a triple short of the cycle. He scored four runs and drove in four. Tom Daly and Dunn each had three hits. 
  • Zach Fortuna pitched three innings of perfect relief for the win.
