Bats Stay Strong in Win over Widener

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball team started its final Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth series off on the right foot with an 8-5 over Widener.

Inside the Box Score

  • Nathan Kessler and Brooks Warrenfeltz each had three hits and two RBIs in the game. Kessler reached base a fourth time via a walk.
  • Drake Friend, Dylan Johnson and Jordan Patterson finished with two hits apiece.
  • A day after scoring 15 runs, the Blazers put up eight more, which was more than enough for Travis Schweizer, who improved to 8-1. He went seven innings and allowed four runs - all in the fifth inning. He struck out three and walked one.
  • Jordan Patterson pitched the final 1.2 innings for his sixth save of the year.

How it Happened

  • Hood (19-17, 9-10) scored once in the first on a RBI single from Warrenfeltz that drove in Patterson.
  • Four more runs came home in the second inning as the Blazers took a 5-0 lead. Friend led off with a single and Quinn Fulton reached on an error to put two runners on. After Cam Esposito was hit by a pitch to load the bases, a two-run single by Kessler made it a 3-0 lead. Greenberg walked with one out to again load the bases and Warrenfeltz followed with a two-run single for the five-run edge.
  • Schweizer cruised through the first four innings, allowing just two hits, but the Pride scored four in the fifth to pull within a run. A bases loaded triple by Greg McDonough got Widener (23-12, 11-8) on the board and he later scored the fourth run.
  • The score held until the eighth when Hood got some breathing room. Warrenfeltz reached on an error with one out and Johnson followed with a single. Wayne Baldwin walked to load the bases before a wild pitch brought in a run to make it 6-4. Friend and Fulton added RBIs before the end of the inning for a four-run advantage.
  • The Pride pushed one run across in the ninth, but Patterson forced a 643 double play to end the game.

Notes

  • McDonough and Stephen DeBellis had two hits apiece for Widener.
  • Kyle McKelvy took the loss. He allowed five runs on 12 hits and three walks over six innings.
  • The win clinched at least a .500 regular season record for Hood for the first time in the program's three-year history.
