Baseball drops pair of one-run games

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Hood College baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games to Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth foe Stevenson. The Blazers fell 1-0 in game one and 3-2 in eight innings in the second game. 

Inside the Box Scores

  • Nate Luscombe pitched a complete game in the opener, striking out five. He allowed one run on five hits and a walk. 
  • Four pitchers combined in the second game. Connor Henniges did not allow an earned run in the first three innings, striking out one and allowing two hits. Des Grimes, Jahlin Jean-Baptiste and Jake Howell combined to allow two runs in five innings, striking out five.
  • Dylan Beck had two hits, two walks and a stolen base to lead the offense. 

Stevenson 1, Hood 0

  • Stevenson's James Wiercinski outdueled Luscombe to give the Mustangs the win. 
  • Wiercinski pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 12 Hood batters. 
  • The only run of the game scored in the sixth. Matthew Kerber singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Alex Kidwiler. 
  • Nathan Kessler led off the seventh with a base-hit but was stranded at second. 
  • In addition to Kessler's single, Jordan Patterson and Beck walked in the game. 

Stevenson 3, Hood 2

  • Kidwiler drove in the winning run with a walk-off single that knocked in pinch-runner Michael Rhodes in the eighth inning. 
  • Beck, Patterson, Andrew Wenner and Daniel Shepherd had two hits apiece for the Blazers. 
  • The Mustangs opened the scoring in the third when Nate Perkins led off the inning with a bunt single and scored on a groundout by Brady Kessler. 
  • Hood tied things up in the fourth. Patterson, Beck and Shepherd singled in succession to load the bases. James DeProspero followed with a sacrifice fly to center that brought home Patterson to make it 1-1. 
  • After Stevenson took a 2-1 lead in the fifth, the Blazers tied the score in the sixth on an RBI single by Trent Copenhaver that knocked in Beck. 
  • Henniges allowed two hits and an unearned run. Grimes struck out two in two innings but allowed one run. Jean-Baptiste allowed two hits and a walk in 0.2 innings but struck out two. Howell went the last 1.2 innings and gave up a run on two hits and a walk. 
  • Malcolm Edelin, the last of four Stevenson pitchers, got the win. He pitched 2.1 innings of perfect baseball. Tyler Graham got the start with Sam Downs and Brady Helsinki following.
