Softball drops two at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. - After a late comeback bid by Hood fell short in game one, Messiah pulled away in game two for a sweep over the Blazers in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth softball action 4-2 and 8-2. 

Inside the Box Scores

  • Cailyn Barthlow had three hits between the two games, including a double and two runs batted in.
  • Katelyn Long reached base four times, via two hits and two walks. 
  • Kaitlin Barron had two hits, both doubles, and walked.  
  • Maddie Walter pitched her seventh straight complete game in the opener. She struck out five, walked one and allowed two earned runs on seven hits. 

Messiah 4, Hood 2

  • The Blazers trailed 4-0 heading into the top of the sixth. Angela Acampora singled with one out and Barron followed with a double to put runners on second and third. A pair of pinch runners replaced the duo with Caitlin Gosline scoring on an RBI groundout by Barthlow. Jordan Specht's RBI single pulled Hood within 4-2 before the end of the inning. Long walked and a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Madelyn Yannetti picked up a strikeout for the third to dash the Blazers' comeback bid. 
  • Messiah's Karlee Stocksdale tripled and scored in the third to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Kara Birosak doubled to lead off the fourth and came home on a triple by Jaelynn Harbold for a two-run lead. A pair of errors in the fifth opened the door for two more runs for Messiah. 
  • In addition to her complete game, at the plate, Walter doubled.
  • Acampora had two hits.
  • Barron doubled and walked. 
  • Rianna Trexler had two hits for Messiah. 
  • Yanetti allowed two runs on eight hits and three walks. 

Messiah 8, Hood 2

  • The Blazers struck first but a five-run fourth by the Falcons was too much to overcome. 
  • Hood had four straight hits to open a two-run second inning. Barron led off with a double and moved to third on a base hit by Specht. Barthlow came through with a single up the middle for a 1-0 lead. After Long reached on an infield single to load the bases, a sacrifice fly by Gosline pushed the lead to two. 
  • Messiah cut the lead in half in the third before breaking the game open the next inning. Trexler hit a two-run home run to give the Falcons the lead. Erin Cressman had a two-run double and Ashley Carroll drove in a run before the end of the frame for a 6-2 edge. 
  • Two more runs in the fifth put the game out of reach. 
  • Barthlow went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. 
  • Long had a single and a walk. 
  • Kiley Banks took the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, in five innings. 
  • Trexler drove in three for Messiah. 
  • Emily Albanese gave up six hits and two runs in two innings for the win.
