Men's basketball just short against Lycoming

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's basketball team struggled to find its shooting stroke in a 67-66 loss to visiting Lycoming in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.

Inside the Box Score How it Happened
  • After a three-point play by Christopher Smalls tied the game at 6-6 in the opening minutes, Lycoming raced out to a 21-10 lead with a 15-4 run. Hood went cold during the span of over nine minutes, hitting just one field goal and missing all eight of its 3-point attempts. The Warriors shot just 6-of-18 during the run but still managed to build a double-digit lead with 5:24 left in the half.
  • The Blazers answered back with a 13-4 run, including six points by Wang and pulled with 25-23 on a pair of free throws by Evans with 28 seconds remaining in the half. Lycoming's James Donovan banked in a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the half to stretch the Warrior lead to 28-23.
  • In the second half, Hood pulled within four points on five separate occasions in the first nine minutes. After Wang cut Lycoming's lead to just 42-38 with 11:01 to go, 3-pointers by Ryan Hollis and Luke Finkbeiner stretched the Warriors' advantage to 10 points with 10:10 to play. The Blazers later used a 10-3 run to pull to within 54-51 with 7:25 on the clock. Wang scored the first seven points of the surge before his twin brother Evan Wang knocked down a 3-pointer.
  • Two 3-pointers by Hollis and another from Darius Dangerfield quickly extended the lead to 63-51 at the 5:37 mark.
  • Hood allowed just four more points the rest of the way as the Blazers tried to mount a comeback. Lycoming made just one of its final 10 field goal attempts in the contest as Hood closed out the game with a 15-4 run.
  • Mason Wang scored with 44 seconds left to cut the deficit to 65-62 and the Blazers got a stop at the other end with  12 seconds left. Lycoming fouled the Blazers to eliminate the chance of a game-tying 3-pointer on each of the next two possessions. The Wangs each went 2-for-2 at the line and Hood trailed 67-66 with 3.1 seconds to go. The Warriors threw the inbounds pass the length of the floor, which was stolen by Evan Wang and the Blazers called timeout with 0.7 second left. Hood's last-chance full-court pass was tipped away at the buzzer.
Notes
  • Hollis led the Warriors with 15 points, going 5-of-11 from 3-point range. Dyson Harward had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Hood uncharacteristically struggled from behind the arc, failing to make a 3-pointer in the first half and finishing 3-for-25. The Blazers stayed in the game with a 21-of-24 effort at the free throw line (88 percent).
  • Hood committed just nine turnovers in the game, while forcing the Warriors into 21 miscues.
  • The Blazers slipped to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Lycoming improved to 10-5 overall and 3-3.
