Free throw accuracy not enough at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Hood College men's basketball team set its single game free throw percentage record and Mason Wang had more attempts without a miss in program history but Lycoming held on to defeat the Blazers 93-87 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.

Inside the Box Score
  • Hood went 21-of-22 at the free throw line (95.5 percent), eclipsing a 19-of-20 performance last season.
  • Wang made more free throws without a miss than any player in program history, going 14-for-14, and finishing with a game-high 35 points. The junior hit 5-of-10 3-point field goal tries and added four assists. The previous best for free throw perfection in a game was Jesse Gutekunst twice going 12-for-12 in 2007.
  • Tyler Evans added 19 points, hitting 3-of-6 from behind the 3-point arc. The senior led Hood with seven rebounds and three steals.
  • Evan Wang dished out seven assists.
How it Happened
  • After trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, the Blazers cut Lycoming's lead to one possession on six occasions in the second half but were unable to tie or take the lead.
  • Christopher Smalls knocked down a fast break 3-pointer in the opening minute of the half to make it 45-43 but a Ryan Hollis 3-pointer stretched it back to five points at 18:29. With 12:43 to play, Evans was fouled and Lycoming was issued a technical foul. Mason Wang and Evans combined to hit all four free throws to bring Hood within 58-56. Four minutes later, a 3-pointer by Matt Ilodigwe capped an 11-5 run to make it 69-61. Wang made a layup with 5:56 to go to pull within three and after another technical foul 13 seconds later, he hit both free throws to make it 71-70.
  • Lycoming scored the game's next 10 points and went ahead 81-70 on two Mo Terry foul shots with 4:06 remaining. Hood answered right back with a nine-point run, culminating in a four-point play by Wang that made it 81-79 with 2:59 left. Hollis and Wang matched 3-pointer on each team's next possession for an 84-82 score with two minutes remaining.
  • The Warriors extended the lead to seven with 1:10 on the clock but the Blazers made one last surge. Evan Wang cut it to five with a layup with 51 seconds to go and after both teams made 1-of-2 on trips to the foul line, Mason Wang was fouled and made it 90-87 with 20 seconds left. Lycoming broke the press and Dyson Harward made a fast break layup and was fouled just two seconds later to put the game out of reach.
  • Lycoming opened the game with a 23-9 run behind a combined 20 points by Terry and Darius Dangerfield. Ilodigwe hit a 3-pointer with 4:11 to go in the half to make it 42-28 but Hood closed the period with a 9-3 run to trail by eight at halftime.
Notes
