WASHINGTON, D.C. - Hood College scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning of a tied ballgame to win 10-7 at Catholic in non-conference action.
At the Plate
On the Mound
- Jahlin Jean-Baptiste, the final of five pitchers for Hood, picked up the win to improve to 2-0. He pitched 1.2 innings, struck out three and allowed two hits. He was not charged with any runs.
- Ryan D'Allesandro started and did not factor in the decision. The junior allowed three runs in 3.2 innings on six hits and a walk.
- Scott Ash pitched two scoreless innings of relief in the sixth and seventh.
- While Hood's pitching staff allowed 18 hits in the contest, 17 were singles to limit the damage.
How it Happened
- With the score tied 7-7 and darkness setting in as the teams entered the top of the ninth, DeProspero walked with one out and moved to second on a balk. Dylan Beck was hit by a pitch to put two runners on and Kroeger followed with a double to right field that scored DeProspero to make it 8-7. The Cardinals went to the bullpen and summoned Nolan Lundholm. Beck and Kroeger would score on a wild pitch and a passed ball, respectively, before Lundholm escaped the inning with Hood ahead 10-7.
- Jean-Baptiste struck out Cole Campbell to start the bottom of the ninth before Keith Campbell singled. The senior reliever then got a pair of groundouts to end the game.
- The Blazers opened the contest with a three-run first inning. Shepherd and Sawyer drew back-to-back walks and executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Copenhaver drove both runners in with a two-run single to left and advanced to second on an error. He later scored on a base hit by DeProspero for a three-run lead.
- Hood added another run in the second to make it 4-0. Kroeger and Wenner started the inning with singles and were sacrificed into scoring position by Rampone. Shepherd brought home Kroeger with an RBI, bunt single.
- Catholic got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lundholm and Connor Cozad started the inning with a single and a double, respectively. Billy Duke's sacrifice fly made it 4-1 and RBI singles by Cole Campbell and Tighe Watson brought the Cardinals within a run.
- Copenhaver walked and scored on a Kroeger base hit in the fifth before Catholic tied the game in the bottom half. Duke had a two-run single to make it 5-5 before Des Grimes picked up a strikeout and Duke was doubled-off first on a fly ball to left to end the inning.
- Sawyer singled in Shepherd, who had reached on a double, to quickly get the lead back for the Blazers in the sixth. In the eighth, Hood made it 7-5 on an RBI groundout by Shepherd but the Cardinals scored two times in the bottom of the inning to tie things back up. Lundholm and Cozad had back-to-back RBI singles in the inning.
For the Opponent
- Lundholm started the game at first base before pitching in relief and went 4-for-5. Cozad, who had the only extra-base hit for Catholic with a double, also had four hits. Duke drove in three.
- Jack Ropelewski took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, in 1.1 innings of relief. Jack Zaffiro started and took a no-decision, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.
