Men's basketball drops MAC Commonwealth clash

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's basketball team dropped a 90-85 final in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play to visiting Alvernia at BB&T Arena.

  • Tyler Evans went 8-of-10 shooting, including 2-for-4 from 3-point range, on his way to 23 points. 
  • Evan Wang finished with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting and dished out six assists. 
  • Michael Riley scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. He went 3-for-6 on 3-point attempts. 
  • Mason Wang had six rebounds and seven assists. 
How it Happened
  • Hood opened the game by hitting six of its first eight field goals, including all four of its 3-point attempts, during a 16-4 run over the initial four minutes of play. Christopher Smalls hit two 3-pointers in the run, with Evan Wang and Riley chipping in from distance, as well. 
  • Wang hit-back-to-back 3-pointers later in the half to put the Blazers ahead 37-19 with 5:19 to go before halftime. 
  • Alvernia found its stride during a 17-4 run to end the half. The Golden Wolves held Hood to just one field goal over the rest of half to pull within 41-36 at the break. 
  • A 3-pointer by the Golden Wolves' Malik Green tied the game at 43-43 with 18:10 left. Hood answered back with a 3-pointer by Smalls and scored after each of the next two times that Alvernia tied the score before Mickeel Allan made a layup at 15:14 to give the Golden Wolves their first lead, 55-53. 
  • After Keith Claiborne Jr. scored to pull Hood within 63-60 with 9:37 to go, Alvernia went on a 9-2 run and built its biggest lead, 72-62 with 7:31 remaining. 
  • From there, Evan Wang started and finished a 10-2 run with 3-pointers as the Blazers cut the deficit to 74-72 at the 4:47 mark. The Golden Wolves answered right back with a 10-4 surge that stretched their lead to 82-74 with a minute remaining. 
  • Hood hit three 3-pointers in the final minute, two by Riley and another by Kobe Butler, to pull within 88-85 with less than two seconds left. Alvernia managed to inbound the ball, Steve Pierce was fouled and made a pair of free throws with 0.9 seconds left to ice the game. 
Notes
  • Justin Thomas scored a team-high 23 for the Golden Wolves and Green added 20 points. Avery Walker went 7-of-11 shooting and finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Allen had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. 
  • Both teams shot at least 50 percent in the game. Hood went 31-of-62 (50 percent), while Alvernia was 32-of-61 (53 percent). 
  • The Blazers went 15-of-31 (48 percent) from 3-point range. 
  • The Golden Wolves held a 40-24 edge on the glass. 
  • Hood dropped to 13-8 overall and 6-6 in the MAC Commonwealth. Alvernia is 11-10 and 7-6.
