Banks, Barthlow lead softball in spring break split

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Hood College softball team defeated Penn State Hazleton 3-1 and fell to Alverno 4-3 as the Blazers continued their spring break trip to Florida. 

At the Plate Inside the Circle
  • Kiley Banks pitched a complete game for the win against Hazleton. She scattered six hits and two walks, striking out three. 
  • Belle Bortner tossed a complete game but took the loss against the Inferno. She allowed three earned runs on nine hits and five walks, while striking out three. 
Hood 3, Penn State Hazleton 1
  • Hood loaded the bases in the second and Baker scored on a sacrifice fly by Gosline for a 1-0 lead. 
  • Back-to-back doubles in the third by Barthlow and Acampora stretched it to a two-run lead and Baker knocked in Acampora with a single later in the inning to make it 3-0. 
  • Banks, meanwhile, allowed just four hits in the first six innings. In the seventh, Jerrika Chorba homered to put the Nittany Lions to make it 3-1. Angie Ordonez followed with a single to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. Banks forced a pair of ground balls to escape the jam and seal the win. 
  • Bridget Smith had a hit, a walk and a stolen base. 
  • Madison Clark took the loss for Hazleton. She went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks. 
Alverno 4, Hood 3
  • Izzy Torres hit a three-run homer and drove in a fourth run later to lead the way for the Inferno. 
  • In the second, Natalie Akin and Zimri Lemonds had back-to-back hits with one out and Torres followed with a home run to left center for a 3-0 lead. 
  • Alverno added another run in the fifth on a single, two fielder's choices, an error and two walks. Torres drew the base on balls with the bases loaded to drive in Chloe Cech for a 4-0 advantage. 
  • The Blazers rallied in the top of the sixth to pull within a run. Bortner walked with one out and Hood had four straight hitters reach base with two outs. Acampora doubled to put runners on second and third. Grove drove in a run with an infield single and an error on the play allowed Acampora to score, making it 4-2. A double by Baker brought the Blazers within 4-3 and Colleen Blasko reached on a fielder's choice to keep the inning alive.
  • Seneca Peters forced a ground out to end the inning and tossed a 1-2-3 seventh for the win. 
  • She had two hits in addition to pitching a complete game for the win. She allowed four hits and three runs. She walked three and struck out eight.
