Women's volleyball gets back in win column against Hollins

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's volleyball team turned in its best hitting percentage of the season to defeat Hollins 3-0.

  • The Blazers won 25-16, 26-16, 25-11. 
Inside the Box Score
  • Hood hit a season-best .309 (40-11-94) behind efficient nights from nearly every hitter. 
  • MacKenzi Wright and Carrington Ray combined for just one error in 32 attacks. Wright had six kills in 14 attempts (.429), while Ray had eight kills in 18 swings (.389). 
  • Caitlin Ambruster had 10 kills and 19 digs to lead the Blazers. 
  • Jackie Malitzki dished out 22 assists. 
  • Emma Elizondo turned in a match-high six aces. 
  • Shane Simms finished with three blocks. 
Hood 25, Hollins 16
  • The Blazers were slow out of the gates, trailing 7-5. Wright earned a side out with a kill and Elizondo stepped up with three straight aces to start a 9-1 run. Wright had three kills in the run, while Ambruster added two as Hood took a 14-8 lead. 
  • Hollins pulled within four on two occasions and trailed 21-16 committing three attack errors around a kill from Simms that allowed the Blazers to go ahead 1-0. 
Hood 25, Hollins 16
  • Hood's attack accounted for 17 of its 25 points and the Blazers committed just five errors to take the second set. 
  • Hollins was within 6-4 when Hood went on a 9-3 run that featured three kills from Simms and two by Ambruster to make it 15-7. 
  • HU chipped the Blazers lead to 16-12 but Elizondo had two kills in a run of four straight points to push the margin to eight at 20-12. Hollins never pulled within six the rest of the way.

  • The Blazers had 10 kills and just two errors in the set, while Hollins struggled with four kills and seven errors. 
  • Hollins once again was at its best at the beginning of the set and tied the score at 5-5 on a kill by Selena Wolfe. 
  • Three straight attack errors opened the way for an 11-1 run for Hood. Elizondo added two more aces in the surge as the Blazers took a commanding 16-6 lead. 
  • A kill by Tyler Sesker kept Hood's lead at 10, 20-10, but a team effort led the way to victory for Hood, as Walissa Jaque, Wright, Ray and Simms each added a kill to close the set. 
Analysis
  • While Hood finished the afternoon hitting .309, Hollins struggled with 19 kills and 18 errors to end the day at .010. 
  • The Blazers' efficiency limited Hollins' defense to only one block in the match. 
  • The service game was also in favor of Hood with a 9-3 advantage in service aces. 
For the Opponent
  • Sesker had nine kills for Hollins. 
  • Zoe Brooks dished out 11 assists.
  • Both Kenna Esquibel and Bella Brown finished with nine digs. 
Notes
  • Hood is 3-9 on the season, while Hollins slid to 1-10.
