FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's volleyball team fell by identical 3-1 final scores to both Elizabethtown and Lycoming in a tri-match at BB&T Arena.
Set Scores
- The Blue Jays defeated the Blazers 25-18, 25-12, 22-25, 25-13.
- The Warriors picked up the win against Hood 27-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23.
Inside the Box Scores
- MacKenzi Wright had 21 kills against Lycoming, the most for a Blazer this year. For the day, she totaled 31 kills and hit .303 (31-8-76).
- Jackie Malitzki's 48 assists against the Warriors tied the fourth-best single-match total at Hood and are the most since 2016. She finished the tri-match with 77 assists.
- Robyn Reus tallied a career-high 30 digs against Lycoming and 44 total for the afternoon.
- Caitlin Ambruster had double-digit kills in both matches, including 18 against the Warriors.
- Walissa Jaque led Hood with five blocks against Lycoming.
Elizabethtown 3, Hood 1
- The Blazers struggled with their hitting for much of the morning's first match.
- Hood trailed 13-9 in the first set before a kill from Shane Simms and three-straight by Ambruster fueled a five-point run to give the Blazers a one-point lead.
- The Blue Jays' halted Hood's run with a Bryanna Miller kills that started an 8-0 run for Elizabethtown. Miller added another kill in the run and Katie Scaggs and Shelly Yohe teamed up for a pair of blocks before three-straight errors from the Blazers made the score 21-14 in favor of the Blue Jays.
- In the second set, a kill by Ambruster pulled Hood within 12-8 after an opening 11-4 run by Elizabethtown.
- An ensuing Hood error gave the Blue Jays the serve and Miller started a string of 11 straight points with the first of three aces in the run as Elizabethtown built a 23-8 advantage.
- The Blue Jays carried the momentum into the third set, claiming a 14-9 early led. Hood responded with seven-straight points, going up 16-14. Hood briefly relinquished the lead after back-to-back kills by Gianna Krinock that made it 22-21.
- Kills by Ambruster and Wright, coupled with two errors by the Blue Jays gave Hood the third-set victory.
- In the fourth-set, Hood trailed 17-12 before an 8-1 run from Elizabethtown sealed the match.
- Miller had a solid, all-around performance with 13 kills, hitting .355, and 14 digs.
- Kambrie Hepler finished with six aces.
Lycoming 3, Hood 1
- Career-best efforts from Wright, Malitzki and Reus were not enough in a hotly contested match where no set was decided by more than three points.
- The first set featured 12 ties and lead changes. Hood held several four-point leads, the most for either side, the last coming on a kill by Simms to make it 21-17.
- Ainslee Barger made it 24-21 with a kill but Lycoming fought off three set-points in a row behind two kills by Arianna Santos and a bad set from Hood. After Ambruster's kill made it 25-24, the Warriors scored the next three points to take the set.
- The two teams traded runs to open the second set. Wright had two kills and Samantha Baker served a pair of aces during a 10-1 run for the Blazers to start the set.
- The Warriors answered with a 9-2 run that pulled them within 12-10. Hood maintained the lead, leading by as many as five at 18-13 before claiming the set 25-22.
- Hood attempted a comeback in the third set, trailing 24-19. Wright and Malitzki teamed up to score four straight points via two kills and two aces to make it 24-23. Elizabeth Kelson halted the run with a kill give Lycoming a 2-1 lead.
- The Blazers again needed a late surge in the fourth set after falling behind 20-12. Back-to-back kills by Ambruster and consecutive aces by Emma Elizondo opened an 11-3 run that tied the set at 23-23. Kills by Ava Cooms and Kelson finished the set and the match.
- Kelson hit .419 in the match with 15 kills against just two errors. Ali Koval added 40 digs and Gabriela Coss finished with 10 aces.
