Second-half push not enough against Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - The Hood College men's soccer team fell to Widener 3-2 in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth matchup. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Jacob Hill and Jake Hynson tallied one goal each for the Blazers. 
  • Cristian Urbina added an assist against Widener. Urbina's nine assists this season sit him tied for 2nd for assists in a season and his 12 career assists has him tied at 6th in career assists in program history.
  • Danny Castillo recorded a season-high 11 saves for Hood. Castillo now has 277 career saves which puts him second in program history. 
How It Happened
  • Widener scored an early goal in the seventh minute with a goal by Nick Brison assisted by Wildan Bondea to take the 1-0 lead. 
  • The Pride added another goal when Stefano Turano assisted on a tally from Michael Donaghy in the 33rd minute to extend the lead 2-0 going into the second half. 
  • Hood scored almost immediately coming out of the halftime break, when Hill found the back of the net only 11 seconds after the new half began to pull the game within one 2-1.
  • The Blazers tied the game at 2-2 when Hynson scored off an assist by Urbina in the 57th minute. 
  • Widener secured the 3-2 win over the Blazers in the 81st minute, when Noah Saba capitalized on a penalty kick.
Analysis 
  • Widener held the advantage 31-8 in shots and 6-4 for corners. 
For the Opponent
  • Brison, Donaghy and Saba all scored for the Pride.
  • Bondea and Turano recorded one assist each.
  • Vinnie Nocito stopped four shots in goal for Widener.

  • "Tough one today for us. We put ourselves in a 2-0 hole early, and that is never easy to come back from, especially on the road. However, I loved the fight that we responded with to score two goals to tie it up midway through the second half."
  • "We exerted so much energy to come back that we conceded a late third goal which eventually cost us the game. We will need to be better from the start to finish on Tuesday if we want to beat York."

  • The Blazers move to 8-5-1 (1-3) on the season and will be back at home on Tuesday, October 19 at 7 p.m. as they host the York College Spartans.
