Men's lacrosse bested by Widener

FREDERICK, Md. - Despite an impressive first half performance, the Hood College men's lacrosse team fell to the visiting Pride of Widener with a final score of 15-9.

Inside the Box Score How it Happened
  • Sweeney scored the first goal of the game in less than 30 seconds of play. After a faceoff win by Widener, the Pride quickly answered back with a goal from Nick Dicicco at 13:48. Widener then scored back-to-back goals, gaining a 3-1 lead with 6:42 left in the quarter. A goal scored by Upman with 2:57 ended the scoring for the first quarter and brought the Blazers within one at the end of the period.
  • LeBarron scored his first goal of the game within two minutes of the start of the second quarter, tying the Pride 3-3. The Blazers took the lead with 10:24 left in the second when a pass from Michael Hilliard allowed Upman to score his second goal of the game. Widener then scored back-to-back goals with 4:17 left to play, leading the Blazers 5-4 once more. Another Upman goal capped the scoring for the second quarter, tying the game at five goals going into the half. 
  • A goal from Upman with 10:22 left in the third gave the Blazers a 6-5 lead, but the Pride answered back with an unanswered six-goal run, taking and 11-6 lead with 2:45 on the clock. Combe scored with 32 seconds left in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to four goals. 
  • Just 39 seconds into the fourth quarter, Mullen scored off an assist from Upman, bringing the score to 11-8. The Pride then scored another four goals, leading Hood 15-8 with 3:55 left to play. An assist from Colby Gallagher allowed Upman to score the final goal of the game, securing the 15-9 win for Widener.

  • Widener held a 61-28 advantage in shots.
  • The Blazers had 25 successful clears out of 34 total attempts. 
For the Opposition
  • Dicicco, Nick Diiorio and Matt Buckley recorded three goals apiece for the Pride.
