Barthlow ties record in doubleheader sweep

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Cailyn Barthlow tied the school record with four hits in a game as the softball team swept a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader from Albright 9-7 and 6-2.

At the Plate
  • Barthlow tied the school record in the opener with a 4-for-4 performance. She doubled twice, drove in two and scored three times. She became the first Blazer in exactly four years to the day to record four hits in a game (Roo Saglimbeni vs. Lycoming). Barthlow walked and scored in game two to finish the day 4-for-6 at the plate.
  • Belle Bortner went 3-for-6 overall on the afternoon with a walk, two runs and two RBIs.
  • Mallorie Hetzel drove in three.
  • Colleen Blasko scored twice in the opener and knocked in a pair of runs in the second game.
Inside the Circle
  • Jordan Long saved game one and won game two. The save was the first for a Blazer since 2018 (Kayli Paugh). She needed just eight pitches to close out the opener with a perfect seventh. She pitched a complete game in the nightcap, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk, striking out six.
  • Bortner started game one and struck out eight in six innings. She allowed five earned runs on 12 hits and one walk.
Hood 9, Albright 7
  • The Blazers benefited from seven Albright errors to open up an early lead. In the first, Brandi Davidson reached on an error and after a Barthlow single, a wild pitch put runners on second and third. Hetzel and Bortner followed with RBI singles to make it 2-0. Davidson singled with two outs in the second and scored on a double by Barthlow for a three-run lead. Three straight errors by the Lions allowed two runs to score for a 5-0 lead through two innings. Another RBI double from Barthlow in the third scored Blasko, who reached on an error, to make it 6-0.
  • Albright scored four in the fifth to cut into the Hood lead. Kaitlyn Chell drove in the final two of the inning with a single to left field to bring the Lions within 6-4.
  • Hood answered with a three-run outburst in the bottom half of the inning. Blasko singled to start the inning and later scored on a wild pitch. Hetzel knocked in Delanie Henry with a sacrifice fly. Barthlow singled and scored on a base hit by Bortner for a 9-4 edge.
  • The Lions continued to keep the pressure on with three runs in the sixth. The first four Albright batters reached via hits and Jamie Dagostino had the final hit of the streak with a two-run single. Veronica Heckman's RBI double made it 9-7.
  • Hood went three up, three down in the sixth and brought in Long to pitch the top of the seventh.
  • Alexis Colon had three hits for the Lions. Dagostino drove in three.
  • Laura Costello took a complete game loss. She gave up nine runs on 11 hits, striking out four.
Hood 6, Albright 2
  • The Blazers came back from a two-run deficit to take the lead before the game was called due to darkness after six innings.
  • Albright scored single runs in the second and third innings to go up 2-0. Hood erased the Lions' lead in the bottom of the third with a four-run inning. Henry walked to lead things off. Davidson doubled in Henry and Barthlow followed with a walk. Hetzel knocked in the tying run for Hood with an RBI groundout. Bortner singled and advanced to second on a throwing error to put runners on second and third. After Acampora walked to load the bases, a fielder's choice by Caitlin Gosline put Hood in front 3-2. Blasko made it a two-run lead with an RBI single.
  • Hood added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Bortner led the inning off with a walk and scored on a double by Angela Acampora. Haley Miller came in to pinch run and later scored on a single by Blasko to make it 6-2.
  • Acampora went 2-for-2 for Hood.
  • Costello pitched the first three innings to take her second loss of the day. She allowed four runs on five hits and three walks. Kathryn Baptiste allowed two runs in two innings of relief. Heckman had three hits.
