FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's
Jake Howell turned in a strong pitching effort and
Nick Rampone tied a school record at the plate as the Blazers took game one from Lebanon Valley College 3-2. The Dutchmen picked up the split of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader with a 13-2 win in the second game.
At the Plate
- Rampone tied a school record held by Nate Kessler with two triples in the opener and drove in all three Hood runs. He added a hit in game two to finish the day 3-for-7.
- Stephen Sommer had three hits in the second game and was 4-for-8 in the twinbill.
- Chris Nalley doubled in game one and stole a base in the second game.
On the Mound
- Howell allowed just two runs on four hits and a walk in the opener, striking out two. Kyle Lewis struck out two in a perfect seventh for the save.
- James Walsh started game two and allowed just an unearned run in four innings on five hits and two walks. He struck out three. Connor Leard pitched a perfect fifth. Scott Ash, the third of the Blazers' six pitchers in the game, took the loss.
Hood 3, LVC 2
- Rampone's first triple of the game drove in Jacob Saylor in the third to start the scoring.
- The Blazers added two more runs to the lead in the fourth. Alex Jenkins led off with a single and James DeProspero was hit by a pitch to place runners on first and second. After the duo moved to second and third after a wild pitch, Rampone ripped a two-out triple to make it 3-0.
- Howell, meanwhile, blanked LVC until the sixth, when Ethan Hurd hit a solo home run.
- After Michael Leri homered to start the top of the seventh, the Blazers brought in Lewis, who retired the next three batters in order.
- Howell outdueled Kyle Kingsbury. Kingsbury took the loss in a complete game. He struck out 10, allowing seven hits and a walk.
LVC 13, Hood 2
- Walsh pitched around lead off hits in the first and second before the Dutchmen got on the board in the third, thanks to an error and an RBI single by Michael Leri.
- The Blazers returned the favor in the bottom of the inning as Joe Monteleone reached on an error and later scored on Sommer's RBI base hit to tie the game.
- A five-run sixth broke the game open for the Dutchmen, fueled by two-run singles off the bats of Chris DeClerico and TJ Holdredge.
- A Nalley RBI single in the bottom of the inning cut the deficit to 6-2.
- LVC added seven more runs during the eighth and ninth innings to put the game out of reach.
- Holdredge led the LVC attack with four hits and five RBIs. DeClerico had a three-hit game and four other players had two hits apiece.
- Brendan Ward picked up the win with six innings of work. Hunter Tipton pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.
