Strong starting pitching leads baseball at LVC

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Hood College starting pitchers Jordan Patterson and Ryan D'Allesandro combined to allow just one run in 13 innings as the Blazers split a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader at Lebanon Valley. The Dutchmen won the opener 1-0 before the Blazers captured the nightcap 9-1.

On the Mound
  • Patterson was outdueled in the opener. He struck out nine in a complete game, scattering five hits. He also went 2-for-3 batting in the game.
  • In game two, D'Allesandro blanked LVC for seven innings. The senior limited the Dutchmen to just four hits and a walk, striking out two. After pitching around a walk, a hit batsman and a double in the first two innings, he retired 14 of the final 16 hitters he faced to pick up the win.
At the Plate
  • Stephen Sommer finished the doubleheader 3-for-7 with two runs batted in.
  • Nick Rampone and Chris Nalley each had three-hit performances in game two. Rampone scored three runs in the game.
Lebanon Valley 1, Hood 0
  • Patterson retired the first seven batters he faced before back-to-back third inning singles and sacrifice fly accounted for the game's only run.
  • Nico Santoro and Luke Blair singled with one-out and a sacrifice fly by Bryan Towers knocked in Santoro.
  • Hood twice got runners to third but could not got on the scoreboard. In the second inning, Nalley was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice and a groundout. Jacob Saylor drew a two-out walk before Chris Stossel recorded a strikeout to end the threat. Patterson led off the sixth with a single and advanced to third in the same manner Nalley had several innings prior. Stossel again escaped unblemished via a ground ball for the third out.
  • Stossel did not strike out a batter, but scattered just three hits, a hit batter and two walks for the win. Tanner Rock picked up the save.
  • Patterson, who took the loss despite a strong effort, was the only hitter to reach base twice for either team.
Hood 9, Lebanon Valley 1
  • D'Allesandro picked up where Patterson left off in game one as Hood's offense awakened to salvage the split.
  • The senior started off slowly with a walk and a hit batsman putting two on with no one out in the first. D'Allesandro then served up double-play ground ball and a flyball to end the inning. After a two-out double in the second, D'Allesandro would not allow another Dutchman past first base.
  • The Blazer offense got on the scoreboard early, scoring once in the first inning. Rampone led off the game with a base hit and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Sommer.
  • Nalley started the second with a double and Alex Jenkins followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. A squeeze play followed with Wheeler driving in Nalley for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Hood broke the game open with a five-run seventh. Saylor and Rampone singled with one out and an error allowed Saylor to score for a 3-0 lead. An RBI single by Sommer followed and an RBI fielder's choice by Patterson extended the lead to five runs. Nalley added an RBI single and Jenkins drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before the end of the inning to make it 7-0.
  • Rampone, who tied a school record with two triples in a game the previous day, ripped an RBI triple in the eighth and later scored to make it 9-0.
  • Kyle Lewis, who relieved D'Allesandro to start the eighth, allowed one run in the ninth.
  • In addition to three-hit games by Rampone and Nalley, Sommer and Jenkins added two hits apiece.
  • Andrew Miles had two hits and drove in LVC's run.
  • Michael Williams started and took the loss, allowing two runs in four innings.
