Seniors shine in senior day sweep

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's seniors combined for 14 innings pitched and nine strikeouts on the mound and six hits and a home run as the Blazers swept visiting Widener in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader 10-5 and 7-3.

 On the Mound
  • Jahlin Jean-Baptiste pitched five innings in the opener and allowed just an unearned run on five hits and two walks. He struck out five en route to his fourth win. 
  • Ryan D'Allesandro and Jake Howell split the second game. D'Allesandro had a quality start, giving up three runs in six innings, striking out six. Howell picked up the win with three innings of one-hit relief. 
At the Plate
  • Andrew Wenner went 5-for-8 in the doubleheader with his third home run of the season. He drove in three and scored three times. 
  • Mikaili Robertson picked up a start and went 1-for-3 in game two after driving in a run in the opener. 
Hood 10, Widener 5
  • After Widener was helped by an error in the first inning, Jean-Baptiste settled in and did not allow another run.
  • The Blazers' offense erased the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Wenner singled up the middle and Stephen Sommer was hit by a pitch to put two on with two outs. Jordan Patterson followed with a single to tie the game and a base hit by Chris Nalley loaded the bases. Robertson's RBI groundout gave Hood a 2-1 lead. 
  • Hood broke the game open with a five-run third inning. Sommer led off with a single and scored on a double by Patterson with one out. Nalley walked and both he and Patterson came home on a double by James DeProspero to make it 5-1. Jacob Saylor extended the lead with a two-run home run to left field, knocking in DeProspero for a six-run lead. 
  • Patterson picked up another RBI in the fourth with a bunt single to drive in Wenner to make it 8-1. Sommer scored later in the inning on a passed ball for an eight-run lead. 
  • Wenner's RBI triple in the fifth stretched the Blazers' lead to 10-1. 
  • Widener go back on the board in the top of the sixth on a three-run home run from Justin Costanzo to pull the Pride within 8-4. 
  • In the seventh, Alex Savkov knocked in Sam Lesher to make it 10-5. Saylor cut down Savkov trying to steal second to end the game. 
  • Wenner and Patterson had three hits apiece for Hood and Patterson drove in three. Sommer scored three times. 
  • After Jean-Baptiste, Gabriel Gilger and Dylan Jaquez combined for the final two innings. 
  • Alex Zilli took the loss, allowing seven runs in three innings. 
Hood 7, Widener 3
  • With the score tied 3-3, Hood scored three times in the seventh inning and went on to win 7-3.
  • DeProspero led off the inning with a single. A two-out error extended the inning and allowed DeProspero to score. Wenner made the Pride pay for the error with a two-run home run to left center field, giving Hood a 6-3 lead.
  • Sam Wheeler had a pinch-hit, RBI single in the eighth to finish the scoring. 
  • Widener opened the scoring in the third inning with a two-run double off the bat of Anthony Boccio. 
  • The Blazers scored three in the fourth to take the lead. Nalley reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by DeProspero. Danny Brennan gave Hood the lead with a two-run single that plated Robertson and DeProspero to make it 3-2. 
  • The Pride tied things up in the sixth to set the stage for Hood's game-breaking seventh inning. 
  • DeProspero and Wenner both had two hits and two RBIs. 
  • Andrew Jaffarian took the loss. He was charged with six runs in 6.2 innings.
