Baseball falls twice at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - Stephen Sommer homered to score the lone run in Hood College's Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader at Widener University. Widener shut out the Blazers in game one, winning by a score of 13-0. The Pride defeated the Blazers again in game two by a score of 17-1. 

At the Plate On the Mound
  • James Walsh started on the mound for the Blazers in game one. He allowed three runs in the first inning and collected one strikeout. Six relievers followed. Jake Rostkowski pitched a scoreless third of an inning. Gavin Pollard blanked the Pride in the sixth.
  • Jacob Cutter was on the bump for Hood in game two. He allowed three runs in the first inning and struck out one batter. As in the first game, six relievers combined for the remainder of the game. Colby Childs pitched a scoreless inning in the third and Kevin Nelson, Jr. and Tyler Sims did not allow a run over the final three innings.

  •  A seven-run fourth inning for Widener broke the game open. 
  • The Pride homered three times in the game. Kyle Brex went deep in the third, Anthony Boccio had a three-run homer in the fourth and Alex Savkov finished the scoring with a solo shot in the fifth. 
  • Brex, Boccio and Justin Costanzo each drove in three. 
  • Dylan Peiffer pitched a five-hit shutout, striking out seven. 
Widener 17, Hood 1
  • The Pride continued to use the long ball to their advantage, hitting four homers in the nightcap. 
  • Tommy McParland hit a solo homer to start the scoring in the first. Matt Samson hit a grand slam in the third to make it 8-0. Costanzo and Bryce Fremgen both hit home runs in an eight-run fourth inning.  
  • Joey Zettlemoyer went seven innings and scattered eight hits before letting the bullpen finish the game.
