FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's
Belle Bortner homered and pitched a complete game in the opener as the Blazers won 3-2 in the first game of a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader with Widener. The Pride captured the second game 3-1.
Inside the Circle
- Bortner scattered six hits and walk, allowing just two runs for her third win of the season. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with a homer.
- Jordan Long took the loss despite a solid pitching performance in game two. The first-year student pitched around 11 hits, allowing three runs. She did not walk a batter.
At the Plate
- Bortner went 3-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs.
- Lindsey Wilson finished 3-for-6 with a double.
- Mallorie Hetzel was 2-for-5 with a walk.
Hood 3, Widener 2
- Hood used a two-run sixth to erase a 2-1 deficit for the win. Hetzel and Caitlin Gosline led off the inning with back-to-back singles and a one-out walk to Colleen Blasko loaded the bases. Pinch hitter Delanie Henry drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in Hetzel for the winning run. A base hit by Cailyn Barthlow followed, knocking in Gosline for a 3-1 advantage.
- The Pride had taken a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Kelly Dodgson. Bortner found her groove after that, retiring 15 of the next 18 hitters she faced.
- She helped her own cause with a solo shot to left-center in the third to make it 2-1.
- After the two-run sixth, Widener threatened with two hits in the seventh before Bortner retired the side.
Widener 3, Hood 1
- Widener scored twice in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie to salvage the split.
- Both teams scored single runs in the first. For Widener, Dodgson knocked in a run with an RBI single for a 1-0 edge. Anna Schipske led off Hood's half of the first with a walk. Barthlow was hit by a pitch and a single by Angela Acampora with one-out loaded the bases. Bortner drove in a run with an RBI groundout, evening the score.
- The two teams' pitching staffs pitched around baserunners nearly every half-inning before the Pride scored the winning runs. Lindsey Cooper executed a squeeze play with runners on second and third to make it 2-1. Cooper was thrown out trying to steal second, but stayed in the rundown long enough for Carli Benozich to score an insurance run.
- Dodgson had four hits for Widener.
- Acampora went 2-for-4 for the Blazers.
- Jennifer Sieminski, who took the loss in relief in game one, came out of the bullpen for the win in the nightcap.
