Scouting the Lions
Albright enters the evening seeded seventh in the tournament after finishing the regular season 10-14 overall and 6-10 in conference play. Sidney Brown leads the Lions, ranking among the conference leaders in scoring (fifth, 15.5), 3-point field goals (third, 2.8) and steals (third, 2.3). Sean Miller leads the team in assists, ranking sixth in the MAC Commonwealth (3.3). The Lions leading rebounder is Jordan Guerrero, grabbing 5.9 boards per game. The Lions are a mainstay in the conference playoffs, making the tournament in each of the past five non-COVID seasons. Albright was the MAC Commonwealth champion in the abbreviated 2020-21 season and last won a championship in a full season in 2010. Rick Ferry is the head coach of the Lions and has posted a 291-240 record in 21 years, missing the playoffs only six times.
Scouting the Blazers
The Blazers enter the playoffs at 17-6 overall and 14-2 in the MAC Commonwealth. Hood is led by the senior guard tandem of twin brothers
Mason Wang and
Evan Wang. Mason is the conference's leading scorer at 22.8 points per game and makes league-best 3.3 3-pointers per game. He also ranks second in steals (2.3), fourth in 3-point percentage (.433), fifth in assists (3.6), fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.5), sixth in free throw percentage (.790) and eighth in field goal percentage (.512). Evan is among the MAC Commonwealth leaders in scoring (seventh, 14.5), field goal percentage (ninth, .493), 3-point field goal percentage (second, .471), 3-point field goals (second, 3.0), assists (third, 3.7), while leading the league in assist/turnover ratio (2.3). As a team, Hood leads the MAC Commonwealth in scoring at 81.9 points per game and has a +8.0 scoring margin, also tops in the league. The high-scoring attack is fueled by a perimeter attack that hits 13.1 3-pointers per game, fourth in all of Division III. Hood is 12th in the nation in 3-point percentage at .381 as the Wang twins each rank in the top 25 individually. The Blazers take excellent care of the basketball, committing just 12.1 turnovers per contest.
Chad Dickman has 90 wins on the Blazers' bench since taking over the program in 2015.
Hood's Playoff History
The Blazers are making their 10th trip to a conference tournament, including the fifth since joining the MAC Commonwealth in 2012. Hood has made each of the last three full-season MAC Commonwealth Championship tournaments dating back to 2019. Hood's last conference tournament win was over Albright in 2014.
About the 2022 MAC Commonwealth Men's Basketball Championship
For the 2021-22 season, tournament expansion was approved to include all nine teams, versus the typical field of five, due to a surge in COVID-19. Lebanon Valley defeated York in the 8/9 game on Feb. 21 in the only game played thus far. In addition to Albright at Hood, LVC travels to top-seeded Eastern, Widener heads to Alvernia and Messiah hosts Stevenson. After the quarterfinals, the semifinals take place on Friday, Feb. 25, with the finals following on Sunday, Feb. 27.
