FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College baseball team benefited from late inning comebacks in both ends of the doubleheader to propel them to 8-6 and 5-3 wins over Gwynedd Mercy University.
At the Plate
- Stephen Sommer went 6-for-8 over the two games, with a home run, a double, one RBI and a stolen base. He also scored three times.
- Tyler Schwarzman hit two doubles and recorded three RBIs, going 3-for-7.
- Alex Jenkins finished the afternoon 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs. He scored twice.
On the Mound
- Colby Childs got the start for game one. He went four full innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks. He struck out four and recorded a no decision. Jack Martin came in relief and pitched two innings, giving up an earned run on five hits and one walk. The first year struck out two and got the win. Kevin Nelson, Jr. closed out the game in the seventh throwing a perfect inning with one strikeout to record his first save of the season.
- Dutch DeProspero got called on to start game two. He pitched five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks. He struck out five. Nelson, Jr. made his second appearance of the afternoon and hurled two more scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Joe Alexander received the win for game two, throwing a single inning and allowing two runs on three hits with one strikeout. Frank Spaide earned the save with a one-hit ninth..
Hood 8, GMU 6
- The Blazers started the scoring off in the bottom half of the first inning. Sommer would lead off the inning with a single, and after a Jenkins sacrifice bunt. Jacob Saylor singled up the middle to score Sommer from second and give Hood an early 1-0 advantage.
- After a Joe Monteleone single, Schwarzman hit a single of his own to score Saylor from second to end the inning with Hood leading 2-0.
- Hood wasted no time adding to their early lead. After three straight singles by AJ Haines, Andrew Perkins and Sommer, Jenkins singled down the line to bring in Haines and Perkins to stretch the Blazers lead to 4-0 after two.
- Gwynedd Mercy got on the board in the third inning. Nick Price recorded an RBI on a safety squeeze, scoring Jack Jamison as Hood's lead was down to three.
- In the bottom half of the third, the Blazers got the run back on a Keegan Brennan single that scored Shwarzman to bring Hood's advantage back to four runs,5-1.
- Gwynedd Mercy mounted a fourth inning comeback scoring three runs on one hit. The Blazers aided the scoring for the Griffins on a Childs' balk and an error by Jenkins to keep the inning going for GMU, as they only trailed by one going into the final two innings 5-4.
- In the fifth inning, the Griffins tied the game up on a Brett Swire sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Price from third to make the score 5-5.
- In the top of the sixth inning Gwynedd Mercy took its first lead of the game on a Swire single, scoring Bill Collins giving them a 6-5 advantage.
- In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Jenkins had the biggest hit of the game with a three-run inside the park home run to give the Blazers an 8-6 edge.
- Nelson Jr. preserved the lead in the seventh to pick up the save.
- Jenkins knocked in a team high five RBIs.
- Ryan Bailey took the loss for the Griffins, he allowed 14 hits and allowed eight runs.
Hood 5, GMU 3
- Hood got on the board first, breaking a scoreless tie in the third on an opposite field homer to left by Sommer. .
- His home run stood until the eighth inning as DeProspero and Livingstone were locked in a pitcher's duel and the bullpens held, as well. .
- The Griffins finally broke the game scoring drought in the top of the eighth inning with a two-run home run by T.J. Brasier. This gave Gwynedd Mercy the lead 2-1.
- Hood did not let the lead stand, mounting its second comeback of the day.Perkins scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and Sommer scored on a fielder's choice by Joe Monteleone to a 3-2 lead. Schwarzman's two-run double stretched the Blazers' lead to 5-2 after eight innings.
- The Griffins threatened in the top of the ninth, scoring once and bringing the tying run to the plate before Spaide slammed the door.
- Sommer had three hits for Hood, including a home run. Schwarzman recorded two key RBIs late in the game.
- Trey Livingstone three 5.2 innings and kept the Griffins in the game, allowing only one run on two hits and recorded four strikeouts to receive a no decision.
- Brasier led the Griffins with three hits including a home run and three RBIs.
