Baseball splits doubleheader at Eastern


ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - The Hood College baseball team split its doubleheader against Eastern University, winning the opener 4-1 and dropping game two 13-12. 

At the Plate On the Mound
  • Joe Alexander was the winning pitcher of game one in relief. He threw 6.1 innings of shutout, one-hit, striking out four and walking three. 
  • Frank Spaide got the start for game one, allowing one run on six hits. In 2.2 innings he had two strikeouts and two walks. 
  • Gabe Rivera started game two, allowing two runs on one hit in 2.1 innings. 
  • Joe Monteleone threw the bulk of the innings, getting 4.2 innings of work out of the bullpen. He gave up three runs on eight hits and had a strikeout. 
  • Cole Whitton, Trey Baker and Stout combined to  finish the last three innings, giving up eight runs on six hits.
Hood 4, Eastern 1
  • Hood took the lead in the second inning, scoring two runs with two outs. Dylan Onorevole walked and Schwarzman singled to start the rally. Jenkins tripled down the right field line to score both runners.
  • Eastern got its first two runners on base in the top of the third inning, as Logan Klember was hit by a pitch and Jason Hall singled. Brad Clemens singled into left field to bring home Klember, cutting the lead down to 2-1 after three innings. 
  • In the fourth, Schopf led off with a double into center field and moved over to second a sacrifice bunt by Saylor. Schwarzman in the next at-bat knocked in Schopf with a single through the right side of the field, the Blazers lead climbed to 3-1. 
  • The Blazers scored another run in the sixth inning with another two out rally. Schwarzman singled and Jenkins walked to start the threat. Stout singled into the left center field gap to drive in Schwarzman as the final run of the game. 
  • Alexander held the Eagles scoreless from the third inning on, holding Eastern to one hit in the final six innings, retiring 19-of-23 hitters he faced.   
Eastern 13, Hood 12
  • Hood trailed 3-1 in game two, then erupted in the sixth inning to score  seven runs. Sam Wheeler began the inning with a walk, and scored as Schopf reached first on an error by Ryan Turanzi at shortstop. Following a Saylor double into the right field gap, Schwarzman doubled in the left field gap to knock in Saylor. The Blazers then rattled off four straight singles by Jenkins, Stout, Sommer and Wheeler to score four more runs. After Sommer moved up to second on a wild pitch, he then was knocked in on Wheeler's single. Hood took its first lead of the second game with a score of 8-3. 
  • Eastern trailed 12-5 before scoring eight runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete the comeback. Matt McHale and Connor Schilling reached base on errors by Stout and Jenkins. The errors proved to be costly as Mark Cruser homered over the left field fence to start the rally for the Eagles, cutting the deficit to 12-8. 
  • Back-to-back singles by Garrett Friend and Brock Langlotz put more pressure on the Blazer defense. Aaron Santos hit a single of his own to bring home Friend. Draig Cooley hit a bases-clearing triple into the right center field gap to bring in Langlotz and Santos to pull Eastern within one run. With two outs and  runners on second  and third, Sean Cottrell hit a line drive up the middle that knocked in both runners for the win.
  • Eastern grabbed the lead in the second inning with a single run and made it 2-0 in the third after a sacrifice fly by Cottrell knocked in Clemens.
  • In the fifth the Blazers cut the lead in half by way of a Jenkins single up the middle that scored Saylor. 
  • Schilling doubled to right center field that scored McHale in the fifth as the lead was now 3-1 for the Eagles. 
  • After Hood grabbed its 8-3 lead in the sixth, the Blazers added another run the following inning on a Schwarzman sacrifice fly. 
  • After a two-run single by Eastern's  Friend in the seventh, Hood scored three runs in the eighth inning. Patterson doubled in a run and Haines drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 12-5 before Eastern's comeback in the ninth.                  
For the Opponent 
  • Cooley went 5-for-9 on the afternoon with a triple and two RBIs.
  • Cruser hit a three-run home run and a double in game two, going 2-for-3.
  • Cottrell went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in game two.
  • Friend had two RBIs, while going 3-for-4 in game two. 
  • Cottrell started game one and threw seven innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits and took the loss.
  • Henry Hutchinson and Carter Cranmer combined to pitch the final two innings. They allowed a hit each.
  • Joziah Trevino started game two, allowing four runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work.
  • Three relievers combined to give up eight runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings. 
  • Tyler Zeck pitched a scoreless ninth inning to receive the win, giving up only one hit and had one strikeout.  
Notes
  • Hood's record moved to 8-18 overall and 1-3 in the MAC Commonwealth on the year.  
  • Eastern improved to 8-17 and 1-4.

The Blazers are back in action on Sunday, Apr. 10 as they take on Lebanon Valley at home for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
