Softball stumbles at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Hood College softball team dropped a pair of games on the road at Bridgewater (Va.) in non-conference action 6-2 and 9-7. 

At the Plate
  • Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, MD/North County) homered in game one, then had two hits in the nightcap to finish the afternoon 3-for-6. She drove in three, doubled and scored twice. 
  • Colleen Blasko (Bowie, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) went 3-for-3 in the second game with a double and two runs scored. 
  • Alyssa Walters (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) added a multi-hit game in the opener and Cailyn Barthlow (Libertytown, MD/Linganore) had two hits and was hit by a pitch in the second game. 
Inside the Circle
  • Ang Casey (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) went the distance in game one but took the loss. She allowed six runs, two earned, on nine hits and a walk. 
  • The Blazers used three pitchers in game two. Rachel Benden (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) started and took the loss, allowing three runs in 1.2 innings. Jordan Long (Middletown, MD/Middletown) pitched the next 3.1 innings and was charged with five runs on seven hits and walk. Gottleib pitched teh final inning and surrendered a run on two hits. 
Bridgewater 6, Hood 2
  • Hood's offense got off to a slow start as Samantha Martin held the Blazers without a hit until Barthlow led off the fourth with a single. Barthlow was quickly erased when Martin induced a 4-6-3 double play in the inning. 
  • Bridgewater led 1-0 via a Torie Shifflett RBI double in the third before breaking the game open in the fourth. The Eagles scored five runs in an inning extended by two Hood errors. Jazymine Smith hit a two-run home run in the inning and Kaitlyn added a run-scoring double. 
  • Gottleib hit a two-run homer off reliever Kearston Bruce with two outs in the sixth to make the score 6-2. 
Bridgewater 9, Hood 7
  • While Hood's offense found its stride in game two, the Eagles carried over their momentum from the first game. 
  • Sarah Wimer drove in two runs in the bottom of the first inning with a double to left center to give Bridgewater a 2-0 edge. 
  • The Blazers cut the deficit in half in the second when Walters walked and scored on Blasko's two-out double. 
  • The two teams traded runs over bottom of the second and top of the third. The Eagles' Brooklyn Fridley knocked in Hannah Mahan with a base hit it in the bottom of the second. Hood pulled within 3-2 in the top of the third when Barthlow was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Gottleib. 
  • The Blazers tied the game in the top of the fourth when Blasko reached on a bunt single and scored on a base hit through the middle by Barthlow. 
  • Hood appeared to take control of the game with a four-run fifth but the Eagles responded with a five-run frame in the bottom of the inning. The Blazers took a 4-3 lead on a sacrifice fly by Walters in the fourth, then scored three more runs with two outs. Angela Acampora (Williamsburg, VA/Westhampton Beach (NY)) drove in a run with an RBI single and then she and Blasko both scored via errors by the Eagles to make it 7-3. 
  • Bridgewater batted around in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. Shifflett doubled home Pinder and Mahan for the final two runs of the inning and an 8-7 advantage. 
  • The Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. 
For the Opponent
  • Shifflett had three of her four hits on the day in the opener and drove in three total runs. 
  • Wimer had a three-hit game in game two. 
  • Martin pitched four shutout innings in the first game for her 10th win, allowing just one hit before Bruce pitched the final three innings for the save. 
  • Emma Killion, the fourth pitcher of the second game for the Eagles, was credited with the win. 
Notes
  • Hood slipped to 16-19-1, while Bridgewater improved to 23-17.
