FREDERICK, Md. - Fresh off the Blazers' historic Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Championship, the Hood College men's basketball team is bringing in three recruits in hopes of continuing the team's success. Walkersville's Josh Stevens, Williamsport's Jevon Yarbrough, and graduate transfer Michael Wallace (McDaniel College) will join the Blazer program for the 2022-23 season.
Stevens, a 6-foot-5-inch sharp-shooting wing, led Walkersville to a 19-6 record this past season. He averaged 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals per game, garnering first team all-area and first team all-league honors.
Coach Chad Dickman's thoughts: "Josh has huge potential as a player for us. He's got great size and shooting ability, plus he's a very good athlete. I think he has an extremely bright future as a Blazer."
Yarbrough is coming off an outstanding season at Williamsport High School, where he averaged 25 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals per game. He also led Washington County in 3-pointers made and free throw percentage (85 percent). The 6-foot point guard was named Washington County Player of the Year,
Herald Mail Player of the Year, first team all-county, first team all-conference and
DMVelite 4th Team All-Maryland.
Coach Chad Dickman's thoughts: "Jevon put together a phenomenal high school career and we think he can have continued success at the college level. He's a vocal leader and playmaker that understands the game well, defends and can score from anywhere on the court. I think his game fits perfectly into our style of play and we have high hopes for him as a player here."
Wallace, a 6-foot-1-inch combo guard from Wilmington, Delaware (Salesianum School), rounds out the three-man class. He comes in as a graduate transfer from McDaniel College, where he averaged 15 points, four rebounds and three assists last season. The two-time team captain was named All-Centennial Conference Second Team and graduated this spring with a degree in business management. He plans on earning his MBA from Hood.
Coach Chad Dickman's thoughts: "We were excited to get a commitment from Mike this spring. Losing three very good players to graduation is tough for any team, so getting a guy that has proven himself at this level is very reassuring. He's an athletic combo guard that can score from all three levels, make plays for teammates and rebound. I'm eager to see his success in our up-tempo system."
Hood won the MAC Commonwealth Championship in 2021-22, its first in school history, on the heels of the Blazers' second 20-win season. Hood connected on a school-record 346 3-point field goals during the year before the season came to a close in the NCAA Championship First Round against then-No. 17 Oswego State.
