MINNEAPOLIS - Hood College's Remi Schaber '26 was one of 20 players selected for the 2022 Women's National Team, which will compete in a five-game friendship series with Canada at Baseball Central in Thunder Bay, Ontario, July 28-August 1.
The soon-to-be Blazer appeared in the first game of the friendship series, coming off the bench to play first base against Team Canada and scored a run in the 16-2 win for Team USA.
Schaber, making her first appearance on the national team, will come to Hood from Memphis, Tennessee, where she played high school baseball for Lausanne Collegiate School. She was named all-district during her junior and senior seasons. According to Baseball for All, Schaber is one of just eight women rostered for the upcoming 2023 college baseball season.Â
The state of Maryland has strong ties to the history of women in college baseball. The first woman to play college baseball was Julie Crouteau at St. Mary's College of Maryland from 1989-92. Kelliann Jenkins also played at SMCM in 2020 before transferring to play at Chatham University. Skylar Kaplan played for Anne Arundel Community College beginning in 2021.
During Hood's time as a women's college, the on-campus Hood Athletic Association often offered baseball from the 1920s until a switch was made to softball sometime in the 1960s.Â
