VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Hood College's
Chris Sappe (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) and the 4x400-meter relay team of
Jamel Mins (Columbia, Md./Atholton),
Owen Ellington (Laurel, Md./Gonzaga College),
Arnold Nguele (Washington, D.C./Dr. Henry A. Wise) and Sappe both broke school records, leading the men's track and field team at the Marlin Invitational hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University.
Record Breakers
- Sappe broke the record in the mile run, with a time of 4:26.50, and finished first place in the event. His time cut a little over one second from the record previously held by Brett Shelley (4:27.37) in 2012.
- The 4x400-meter relay team, which placed sixth in the event, broke the school record with a time of 3:32.45. The time cut over 6.5 seconds from the previous record, set in 2008 by Ola Komolafe, Tomilyao Komolafe, Mike Cahill and Blair Ames (3:38.71).
Highlights
- Rell Asamoah (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) placed sixth in the preliminary round of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.20 seconds. The time ranks the first-year student third all-time in event in school history. Asamoah finished seventh in the final with a time of 7.28 seconds.
- The Blazers had a pair of impressive performances in the shot put from Dustin Miller (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and Ryan Leonardi (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti). Miller placed seventh with a mark of 11.51 meters (37-7), while Leonardi recorded a personal best with a mark of 10.89 meters (35-8 3/4) to place 10th overall in the event. The mark tied the fourth best throw in the event in school history.
